Description
I am the original owner of this Yamaha M-80 Power Amplifier. I purchased it, along with a C-80 Control Amp and T-80 Tuner in 1985, when my brother-in-law was stationed in Japan. Along with a Dual CS-5000 turntable and Onkyo cassette deck, this combination was my primary source of musical happiness for over 20 years. At 250 WPC into 8 ohms, and the ability to drive 2-ohm loads, the M-80 can drive just about anything while loafing sweetly along. Bass control is phenomenal, and there is seemingly no upper limit to volume. Personally, I enjoyed incredible sound from it when paired with the 4-ohm, high-efficiency Infinity 3000P loudspeakers that I had back in the day. I think this may have been because the amplifier was able to operate in Class A at lower output power levels while still being satisfyingly LOUD. Early on, I accidently broke the Speaker A Right Ch Blk speaker terminal while tightening down new cables. At the time, this was not an issue, as I simply switched to the B speakers for primary listening. However, in the mid 90s, I obtained a pair of Polk RT55i loudspeakers that I wanted to biamp. Since the M-80 C Speakers are put in series with the B Speakers when switched in (for impedance protection), utilizing the C Speakers was not an option. Instead, I soldered a speaker wire to the broken A speaker terminal so I could again utilize the A Speakers for biamping (see photos). Its not elegant, but it worked, and I noticed no degradation in sound quality. By 2005, I began transitioning into home theater with various HT receivers (ugh), initially using a speaker switch to switch from the receiver to the M-80 for music listening, By 2015, I had graduated to a pretty decent HT receiver, and in the interest of space, the M-80, C-80, and T-80 went into storage. Fast forward to today, and I am downsizing, and ready to let someone else enjoy these vintage classics. This unit is in very good cosmetic condition, with no deep scratches or damage on the cabinet, and no significant scratches on the display. I have highlighted the scratches that are on this unit in the photos, so please review. Functionally, it looks and sounds great, is fully operational, including Auto Class A, and meter lights/switches and balance pots function as they should. Other than the damaged speaker terminal, I am not aware of any defects present in this amplifier, however, other than blowing out dust periodically it has never been serviced. Latent defects can be present in vintage electronics, this amp is approaching 40 years old, and Im selling it as-is with no implied warranty. Ideally, the buyer will clean and recap this unit and give the solder joints a good going over to ensure many more years of enjoyment. Ill include the original receipt, owners manual, and warranty card. I no longer have the original box. I am able to offer local pickup in Tucson, AZ, otherwise shipping cost is as shown. The C-80 and T-80 are also available, see separate listings. Happy listening.
