I’ve had this transport for many years, lent it to a relative for a few more, then got it back again. I modded it to increase performance and reliability. It has a Burson low jitter clock fed from a reworked power supply featuring low noise rectifier diodes. Also, ERS paper is used in critical areas on the circuit board. Mechanically, a geared pulley that was a major failure point has been replaced. (This part is used to open and close the tray). This model uses the highly regarded (but unfortunately discontinued) Philips CDM 9 Pro mechanism. It has been very reliable for several years, up until now. Lately, the unit will not read an inserted CD more than half the time. Im assuming this has to do with the laser getting weak. I get around this by “assisting” the CD after hitting the play button. With the cover off, I spin the CD by hand(!), essentially kick-starting it. After this, it can be paused and will play whatever track is desired, as long as you don’t hit stop. It’s inconvenient, but it works. Think of this CD transport like a turntable with a weak motor, and you’re in the ballpark. I’ve put up with this because I couldn’t find anything I could afford that performed close to the same level as this unit. A recent gift changed that, and it’s why I am selling this now, with the understanding of what owning this unit entails. Who knows how long it will continue to work this way…I can’t say. The clock alone, electronic parts, and heavy steel case have value on their own, so that is something to consider. This model was about $2,500 new, back around 1987 when it first came out. The seller has enjoyed playing this PS Audio transport to play CDs for the last couple of years. It has great versatility as described in the Home Theater article that reviewed this transport. In pertinent part, they stated the following: The PerfectWave Transport is different from any other transport I have used, in that it reads the data off of the disc and feeds it into a memory buffer before sending it out. PS Audio also refers to this $4,000 disc transport as a Memory Player, a more apt title, as it hints at what sets this apart from other transports. The PerfectWave Transport will play back WAV files up to 192 kHz/24-bit on DVDs as well as standard CDs. The data is read by a multiple-read drive in a manner akin to Exact Audio Copy (a highly regarded audiophile CD reader) to obtain a bit perfect data stream. The data stream is fed to the Digital Lens memory (the Digital Lens is PS Audios jitter reduction device) and then sent out via a low jitter asynchronous clock. The digital output choices are AES/EBU (via XLR), I2S (via HDMI), Coax and Toslink. The seller particularly liked CDs via the I2S via HDMI digital output and has included in this sale a QED Reference HDMI cord to use the HDMI digital output function. Also included is a power cord. PS Audio has a detailed 20 page manual for this transport, and I recommend you going to their website to download this helpful guide.
