They were very expensive at the time and made of high quality components because the technology was still new. Production hadn’t move to low cost regions yet. Nor had the quality deteriorated. This unit is in beautiful cosmetic condition. No dents or scratches - very presentable. 9.8/10The unit is clean inside and out and plays perfectly. I’ve owned the unit for the last 10 yrs and it’s been used on a semi-regular basis. My main CD player is a Denon also made in Japan from 1991. This comes from a clean, non-smoking home and is ready for use. I will demo the player before purchase. I will have it set up with a receiver and speakers. No remote, no box, no instructions. Just the CD player. NOTE: These ES models were the top-of-the-line models by Sony - they considered them “audiophile grade”. This unit will occasionally lock up when trying to change CDs - maybe 1 out of 30 times. And sometimes the tray doesn’t open and power has to be cycled on and off. It could probably use new belts - that might solve some of the issues. These units are known to be a little finicky sometimes - thus I have a lower price on it. Still I’ve used it on and off for years and just live with the personality. Please see my other listings for other great stereo gear.
