The Sansui SE-8 is a well-known and sought after equalizer, these are getting more difficult to find especially in this condition. This is really a rare find in such immaculate condition. What makes this unit better than others Why the starting price is higher:Immaculate condition! No visible scratches or Marks. It is almost mint like new. Even the RCAs shine like new.It comes with OEM Sansui rack Handles. these are not replicas that sell for $50 on ebay, but OEM parts, never mounted, no scuffs on themFully Serviced. I removed the sliders and individually cleaned each control. there are no issues, everything works.Capacitors can age over time and the performance and sound degrades on these Vintage units, I have replaced all capacitors in the Audio path and in the power supply with better and audiophile parts. See photos. Some of the parts I used are rare and not made anymore like Elna Silmic II and Nichicon Muse. The Op-amps that Sansui used were good at the time, but personally I never liked the sound of the 4558s. So I decided to replace them to the much better Texas Instruments NE5532. The 5532 has a higher unity-gain bandwidth, 10 MHz instead of 3 MHz. That means it can provide more gain over the same bandwidth, or more bandwidth at the same gain. This helps reduce distortion and makes the op-amp switch faster in a more linear manner at Audio frequencies.The 5532 seems to be able to drive lower impedance loads. Several of its parameters are specified with a 600 ohm load, while the 4558 specs do not go below a 2 k ohm load, this means it can better drive the capacitors that form the various frequency filtersThe 5532 has lower noise. Its equivalent input noise at 1 kHz is 5 nV per root Hz, while the 4558 is 8. This translate to lower hiss and noise, especially during quieter passages, and any recordings made on tapes will also benefit.To me the 5532 just sounds better and warmer. However I did not just solder the new amplifiers in, I installed 10 Dip-8 Sockets, and now you can revert back to the old OEM op-amps if you like (provided in the unit), or indulge in some op-amp rolling if you so desire.After all this work, this is not a regular SE-8 anymore, it is a whole new level of performance.
