THORENS TD-280 MARK IV TURNTABLE BELT DRIVE SEMI-AUTO ORTOFON 510 MK II Supplied with replacement power supplyClassic, Czech built, German designed belt drive semi-automatic turntable. Smudged date stamp inside looks like 1996. Represents a substantial upgrade in bearing and tonearm over the earlier TD 280 models. Cast alloy platter on alloy sub-platter; bearing, motor and tonearm all directly mounted into wooden plinth, supported by damped feet. Motor is an AC model. TP 28 tonearm with suspended anti-skating weight, fitted with Ortofon 510 Mark II moving magnet cartridge. Output to phono/RCA plugs with groundwire.Semi-automatic. Manual cueing, with tonearm lift and shut-off at the end of a side. Rather than mechanical operation, a solenoid is used to lift the tonearm; as the tonearm reaches the end of its travel on a the record surface, a photo switch is activated as its lamp is covered by the tonearm mounting; the current to the solenoid is cut, releasing the tonearm and allowing it to rise at the end of a side. This means there are no trip levers and cogs which can cause resonance and microphony which affect the cartridge.Moving the speed swith to 33 or 45 and pressing start switches the motor on. Arm is raised and cued manually with arm lift. Lift and cut at end of a side is automatic as described above.All in good working order. Tonearm has good bearings, anti-skating works fine- simple swinging counterweight type. Equipped with Ortofon 510 Mark II moving magnet cartridge. Main bearing is smooth and silent; motor runs virtually silently and gets to operating speed almost immediately. Belt is used but in good working condition. Cartridge has a good used stylus.The power supply adaptor is non-standard; the original is a 16VAC 150mA unit whose dummy earth pin is snapped off, making it impossible to insert into a wall socket. The last owner solved this by fitting the adaptor to a splitter plug which is then plugged into the wall. This is bulky and unsightly, and didnt fit under my rack, so I replaced it with a 15V 500mA unit which does the job perfectly, giving a quick start and exact pitch. It has been soak tested for 2 hours at 45rpm with no ill effects to motor or PSU. Winning bidder can have either unit.Deck itself is in excellent cosmetic condition, plinth is virtually unmarked, as is tonearm. Lid has one deep scratch on the extreme right side, some minor scratches and polishing marks. The speed selector knob is a replacement, the original being absent.Setting up is easy: balance the tonearm by screwing/unscrewing the counterweight on the stub, set the calibrated ring to zero, turn counterweight to required tracking force (1.25-1.75g). Set anti-skating to the same mass by moving the nylon loop along the calibrated bar at the rear of the tonearm. One of my favorites a Dual 510 belt-drive turntable. No frills, just solid performance. With an Ortofon FF15E Mk II cartridge which is an improvement from the original to the turntable, likely also an Ortofon. Cover is very clean with minor scuffs, theres a little nick in the wood grain on the bottom front that could be glued back into place or touched up. New belt, tested by listening to an LP on a stereo. I have sold +100 turntables on eBay since 1998, I have a lot of experience packing these so they will survive shipping. You will have to re-install the platen and belt as they will be lifted off and packed in styrofoam. I was therefore expecting an inferior performance from the F15E, but I’ve since learned that cartridges are not always so straight-forward.Treble: High-frequency delivery is crisp and clear, with a good level of detail, and gives air to the sound. The treble makes an important contribution to the precise sound of this cartridge but isn’t too forward and is unlikely to prove tiring. Midrange: The mid-band has nice body, and is again clear and open with a decent level of detail. It gives vocals good presence and texture, and sibilance is handled reasonably well.Bass: The bass is forward, punchy and assertive. Deep bass is a strength of this cartridge and lends impressive weight to the sound. The bass is generally of extraordinary quality, especially at the price – taut, agile and reasonably textured. It allows the cartridge to navigate fast-moving rhythms with ease but without bass weight suffering.The above elements come together to produce a very pleasing whole, the overall character being a clean, tight sound with a relatively neutral balance. Some may perceive the balance as slightly warm, due to the prominence of the bass. The deep bass certainly gives weight to the sound but there is a solid feel across the entire frequency spectrum, right through to the upper-treble. Detail is also nicely portrayed across all the bands, although this is not a highly detailed, analytical cartridge. The excellent dynamics add significantly to the entertainment value of this cartridge, but are not over-bearing. While the F15E works well with all types of music, I find that its tight, punchy, agile presentation is well-suited to fast, 1980s electronic Pop. The main criticism that can be levelled at this cartridge is that there is occasionally a hint of hardness and lack of subtlety on some material. It also doesn’t have the sweet and charming personality that some cartridges have, but this is a minor quibble. It seems to me that the F15E was an exceptional budget/mid-priced cartridge which most listeners would find very satisfying and entertaining.
