Unit had one channel out. Repaired channel. Partial recap of all out of spec caps. Bias, DC offset, and meters adjusted to factory specs. All controls cleaned and tested. All functions tested working. Cosmetically 7 out of 10.

This NAD 3020 Series 20 Version 1 Amplifier arrived with blown fuses due to shorted driver and output transistors in one of the Power Amp channels. I have replaced the driver and output transistor pairs of BOTH channels with matched quad sets so that both channels are electrically identical. The Output Transistors have been mounted with ceramic thermal washers that do not require grease. They look much better, too. The Power Supply caps have all been upgraded from 35V to 50V nichicon, Rubycon, Chemicon and Panasonic. The 4 Main caps are 50V nichicon FW Gold. The Phono Preamp input caps are nichicon MUSE Bipolar. The other audio caps have been upgraded to nichicon Fine Gold and ELNA. Ive upgraded the Power Switch to a hefty 7 amp version which should last forever. I have also upgraded the Power Amp Offset adjustments to multi-turn trimmers which are more precise and less likely to drift. I have re-soldered the rear RCA and DIN jacks, the front switches, controls, and headphone jack, and much of the main board itself. I then cleaned the solder side with Flux Remover and Alcohol. It looks better than new. Cosmetically, this unit is is excellent condition but with minor scratches on top. Please see photos. It is the ONLY 3020 version without the series muting FETs known for their Welcome Hum and other various distortions. AFAIK, this is also the version with the mystical layout artwork error that improves the sound quality ??? Please advise. Version 1 can be identified by the separate Power Supply board mounted on the back panel, the Power transformer mounted on a bottom plate, and the 4 Main Caps located in the front left of the circuit board. FWIW, the later 3020 Series 20 Version 2 had a 6 transistor phono preamp and the 4 transistor control preamp topology used thereafter. The 3020A and thereafter then settled on a 4 transistor phono preamp, including a low noise version for MC cartridges on some units.

I won’t go into all the tech specs here as if you’re looking at this listing you likely know it already. Suffice to say this is a glorious beast of a power amp. 150 watts continuous (NOT peak) per channel at 4/6/8?, and will do 400 in Bridged mono mode!! This was used to drive my fronts pre-outed in a home theatre set up, when playing music in stereo mode the sound is amazing. Sadly with the current economic crisis I have removed this from my set up and am letting my home theatre receiver power my fronts. Very sad face. This was professionally recapped some six months ago, and has just been fully serviced ready for sale by MJ Stills Pro Audio, Sussex. The interior of the unit is pristine. Both recapping and servicing were a considerable expense. This is NOT simply an old second hand item and that is reflected in the price. This unit was in need of a new Power Switch and a new set of Muting FETs. It is otherwise all original except as upgraded below; I have updated the mute ON/OFF circuitry to match that of the 3225PE. See last photo. This allowed me to replace the original 3 Amp Power switch with a more robust 7 Amp switch that should last forever. I have upgraded all of the Electrolytic Capacitors. The Power Supply caps are nichicon, Chemicon, and Panasonic. The Phono Preamp and Control Preamp audio caps are ELNA. The Phono Input coupling caps are ELNA SILMIC II Bipolar. The Power Amp caps are nichicon Gold. For added versatility, I have repurposed the (fixed line level) Tape Output RCA Jacks to be the (variable level) Preamp Outputs suitable for a powered Subwoofer, external Power Amp, etc. They are equivalent to the Preamp Outputs on the 3225PE which allows this unit to be used as a Preamp only. This reduces the Main Rails to 60V and more accurately emulates the operation and performance of the iconic 3020 Power Amp section while also staying within the specified safe area of the output transistors, making them less likely to fail. While this does reduce the specified IHF Dynamic Power, I have compensated somewhat on this unit by Beefing_Up the RMS Performance with upgraded Main Caps, going up from 4700uf to 6800uf Chemicon. Ill also be happy to reinstall the fuses on request.

This NAD 7000 was damaged during shipping. The Balance and Volume controls were pushed upward and in towards the chassis. I was able to straighten things out such that the controls turn smoothly and operate properly, but the motor clutch for the remote control volume operation is no longer functioning properly. Im including a new 6-button basic learning remote programmed for Power On/Off, Mute (Low Level) On/Off, Channel Search Up/Down, Tape_1, and Tape_2 input selects. This will provide three remote source selections; Tape_1, Tape_2, and the selected input (Phono, Tuner, CD, or Video). If a remote volume control is not a requirement for you, then this unit is a great deal for a top tier vintage NAD Monitor Series Receiver / Amplifier / Phono Preamp / Tuner that has been restored and recapped as follows; 1) Upgrade all of the Electrolytic Capacitors in the Integrated Amplifier and Power Supply sections. The audio coupling caps are nichicon MUSE Bipolar and Meritek Film. The Power Envelope 80V caps are nichicon and the 50V Main Capacitors are United Chemicon. The other caps are Rubycon, ELNA, Panasonic, etc. 2) Replace overheating resistors. Two of the 1/4 W resistors in the power amp are specified on the schematic to be 1/2 W and actually dissipate over 1/4 W. They get so hot that theyve discolored the PC board. Ive replaced them with 1W metal film resistors and elevated them away from the PC board surface. 3) Disable Soft clipping. This circuitry is another hot spot on the 3240PE/7240PE and 7000 main boards that also involves a small coax cable with 140 VDC across it; rather dangerous for the unsuspecting. The underrated components have also discolored the PC board and deteriorated themselves. The soft clipping circuit actually limits the amplitude of the INPUT signal going to the Power Amp in a graceful way based on the Main Rail voltage. I dont really see the benefit for this model, given that the IHF Power rating is 160 WPC. I have therefore disconnected the 140 V coax and disabled the soft clipping operation. No more overheating or shock potential. 4) Upgrade the Bias controls to multi-turn trimpots. They provide more precise adjustments that are also less likely to drift. 5) Clean and Deoxit the controls and switches to operate smoothly and quietly. It is essentially the 1600 Monitor Series Preamp/Tuner combined with the Power Envelope Power Amplifier from the 3240PE/7240PE. It provides 40 WPC RMS with 6 dB of headroom for up to 160 WPC IHF, all with a Power Transformer that is relatively small and lightweight. Quite an impressive design with an effortless, spectacular sound. The Phono Preamp is the same all discrete 4-transistor topology that NAD used for years beginning with the 3020A and continuing into the Monitor Series. The 7000 has the low noise version with the MM/MC gain select switch. The tuner section is noteworthy for its superior FM sound quality and switchable FM noise reduction (FM Blend). Even the AM sounds good.

This NAD 3140 has been upgraded and custom retrofitted to eliminate the thermal issues that plagued this model throughout its production. There are overheating 2-watt resistors in the preamp power supply that bake (and prematurely deteriorate) the surrounding purple electrolytic caps to a golden brown. I have relocated these resistors on terminal strips above and away from the other components. See the last photo. A second set of overheating resistors that supply the front panel LEDs (of all things!) has been eliminated by upgrading the ancient LEDs with much lower power versions. The soft clipping circuit has been updated to the latest Zener diode version (per the Service Bulletin) but with four 1 watt zeners instead of two 1/2 watt zeners to reduce the overheating that was occurring in that area as well. I have installed four Banana Jack/Binding Posts for SPEAKER_A in addition to the original Spring Terminals. The standard 3/4 spacing accommodates paired plugs. I have replaced ALL of the electrolytic capacitors. The four 4700uF Main Caps have been upgraded from 50V to 63V since they are actually charging up to 51V in this unit (NAD was notorious for this). The other power supply caps have been upgraded to higher voltage and/or 105C temp ratings. The audio caps have been upgraded to ELNA, nichicon MUSE BP, FW, and Fine Gold Audio as well as Vishay Film in the Bass_EQ and Control amps. I also replaced many of the 0.1 disc caps that were looking old and baked and worn with new multi-layer ceramics. I have upgraded the 4 very sensitive Bias and Offset adjustments to multi-turn trimpots. They allow a more precise adjustment that is less likely to drift or be accidentally disturbed. I have cleaned the switches with Deoxit D5 and cleaned/lubed the pots with Deoxit Fader F5. Cosmetically, this unit is in good condition. It has a few scrapes on the top cover and the front panel. It is rated at twice the RMS power (40 WPC), has two phono inputs, two source selection switches (listen and record), two Bass_EQ contours, two tape loops, two sets of speaker outputs, two led power meters, and even two power transformers that are wired in series to behave as one massive chunk of iron. All that combined with over twice the Main Capacitance provides a Dynamic Power IHF rating of 80 WPC at 8 ohms, 130 WPC at 4 ohms, and 160 WPC at 2 ohms. The 3140 is an all-discrete design. The sophisticated 7-transistor MM/MC Phono Preamp has both Phono_1 and Phono_2 input jacks DC coupled to an FET gate with no coupling capacitor. A very unique feature of the 3140 is its 5-transistor 12db BASS_EQ Amplifier stage that can be selected to extend the low frequency response of almost any speaker by an octave centered around 45 Hz (Tower Speakers) or 70 Hz (Bookshelf Speakers). While the additional demands on the power amplifier can be significant, this amp can deliver. Another unique feature is the S.L.C. or Speaker Lead Compensation feedback in the Power Amplifier. It is meant to compensate for long and/or light gauge speaker wire, but I find it pleasing under all conditions, and usually leave it on. NOTE: Unlike most power amplifiers, the 3140 connects to all Speakers as if in a bridged configuration. The Negative Speaker terminals are NOT common ground. They are actually the S.L.C. feedback for each channel.

A Good example of the NAD 3020A. 100% serviced and working perfectly. These amplifiers have remarkable sound quality and are suprisingly loud if you want them to be.. The A versions are often seen as having the best design in the 3020 series. This version includes Phono MM & MC inputs. The Original Motorola MJ2955/ 2N3055 power transistors still present. The front panel is overall good, but has a chink and small crack on the left side. Its still quite solid though - On the right there is some markings by the volume control too. Neither are too bad, but they are there to see. Check pictures. The casing is pretty good. Input RCA connectors are 24 Carat Gold plated as is the Phono earth connector. Amp has totally cleaned circuit board. L & R Outputs are equal at full volume. All potentiometers have been serviced (Volume, tone etc) and work with no crackles. ALL of the Electrolytic capacitors have been replaced including larger Power Supply Filter capacitors. It is imperative that these be replaced. Old capacitors of 40 years+ are well past their End Of Life. At best the old capacitors found in these amps today have values that are drifting and they will likely fail at some point. New multi-turn trimpots have been installed for Amp bias adjustment. DC offset and bias have been optimally set. Motorola Output transistors have been remounted on new Silicon thermal transfer pads, replacing old dried mica insulator/ thermal compound. Refurbished, all new capacitors, in mint condition, with remote control. Only a total of 5 capacitors are orignal, all were checked for functionality and left in place as they are at or were above new spec, overall. All other capacitors were swapped out for 105 degree C long life new capacitors. Approx 80 of them. I also added in proper orignal spec new incandescent bulbs for the FM/AM display window. The potentiometers are clean, no cleaning fluids were used on them. Switches are clean, the few that are there. the stereo-mono switch and the B speaker switch, are physical switches, the rest are touch tactile and work via controlling switching chips and the like. I expect that this unit will work fine for many more years of trouble free use. Might even still be using it in the year 2033. Im not guaranteeing this, of course... but there is no reason to expect that it wont last 10 years. Its the capacitors that bring NAD units down (and other brands) and this one needed all new capacitors, its from 1995. I COULD have changed a few capacitors (like 99% of technicians do) and let it roll out to you and claim its perfect when it fact, it would not be... and just be a ticking time bomb of eventual failure. Sooner rather than later. this way, it will be like a new unit and maybe last at least another 10 years. so be decent and offer me what the work and the unit is worth: Its a classic older NAD unit... with a long lifespan ahead of it. Ps, if the shipping seems high, well Im in Canada and the shipping costs more than Im charging. Shipping costs have more tha doubled in the past 2-3 years. thanks for your time.

NAD 1000 Monitor Series preamplifier This preamplifier is in beautiful condition and has been recapped (all electrolytic capacitors) and upgraded. Cosmetically it is very nice with minimal wear. The faceplate is excellent but there are two tiny nicks at the top edge (see close up photo). All electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with newer, higher quality components. Where appropriate the capacitance and voltage specs were increased. Nichicon PW caps were used in the power supply, Nichicon audio grade KZ and FG caps for signal path. A few small value caps in the preamp and headphone sections were upgraded to WIMA MKS film caps. Please feel free to ask any questions.

This NAD 3020 arrived with a constant output hum due to several failed Electrolytic capacitors in the Preamp Power Supply. It is all original except as upgraded below. The Motorola output transistors were all manufactured within the same month. Datecode 8039 The Power Supply caps have all been upgraded from 35V to 50V nichicon, Rubycon, Chemicon and Panasonic. The 4 Main caps are 50V nichicon FW Gold. The Phono Preamp Input and Output audio coupling caps are nichicon MUSE Bipolar. The other audio caps have all been upgraded to nichicon Fine Gold. A hefty 8A power switch replacement had already been installed and works good as new. Ive installed a set of Speaker Output Banana Jack/Binding Posts on the rear panel for easier/better connections than the Speaker Spring Terminal Block. Please see photos. I have upgraded the Power Amp Offset adjustments to multi-turn trimmers which are more precise and less likely to drift. I have re-soldered the rear RCA and DIN jacks, the front switches, controls, and headphone jack, and much of the main board itself. I then cleaned the solder side with Flux Remover and Alcohol. It looks better than new. Cosmetically, this unit is is very good condition with some scratches on top. Please see the last photo. This initial version is also identified by the separate Power Supply board mounted on the back panel, the Power transformer mounted on a bottom plate, and the 4 Main Caps located in the front left of the board. AFAIK, this is the version with the mystical layout artwork error that improves the sound quality ??? Please advise. FWIW, the second version of the 3020 Series 20 had a 6 transistor phono preamp and the 4 transistor control preamp topology used thereafter. The 3020A and thereafter then settled on a 4 transistor phono preamp, including a low noise version for MC cartridges on some units.
