Description
Naim IXO Crossover, good fully working condition, original box, Snaic Cable and Manual Here we have a relatively rare piece of electronic equipment from British company Naim Audio. It is the IXO Crossover and our unit dates from 1998 and comes in good condition, just one slight mark on the fascia – please see photographs. It is supplied in original factory packaging, with manual, and SNAIC cable. Naim Say…. The launch of our new active crossover, the IXO, has prompted a number of questions from people unfamiliar with the way in which active systems work, so we thought a few words about their benefits would be useful and interesting. The loudspeakers in most hi-fi systems have either two or three separate drive units to cover the full range of frequencies from bass through the mid-range to treble. In a passive set-up the signal coming from the power amplifier contains all of this information, so a circuit is needed to separate out the different frequency bands and distribute them to the appropriate drivers. The simplest and cheapest way to do this is with a passive filter network – the crossover. This is a circuit board fitted with electronic components, mounted either inside or outside the loudspeaker cabinet. The main disadvantages of this method are that dividing up high levels of current in this way introduces distortion, the enemy of all high quality audio systems, wastes amplifier power, and thus reduces control over the loudspeaker. An active system is quite different. The crossover now contains “active” devices such as transistors and op-amps (therefore it requires a power supply) and is connected between the preamp and the power amplifier, with separate power amplifiers for each frequency band. The IXO crossover has a built in power supply and is designed for use primarily with the Intro and Credo loudspeakers. The IXO features various technologies to reduce microphonic effects, in particular a compliant mounting for the main circuit boards and the DIN sockets on the rear. On the rear of the IXO Active Crossover there are controls to adjust the High Frequency and Low Frequency outputs. These are normally preset when the unit leaves our factory but may be fine-tuned to suit the listener’s preferences. Active filters have lower distortion than passive ones, due to the elimination of cored inductors and the use of higher quality lower value capacitors. Inter-modulation distortion in the power amplifiers is reduced due to operation over a narrower bandwidth (i.e., just treble). Effectively the power amplifiers are connected directly to each driver, thus driving them from a lower impedance source, which tends to suppress the fundamental resonance via electromagnetic damping and reduces distortion. Variations in driver sensitivity or room characteristics can be easily controlled via gain control potentiometers. If all this sounds a bit technical, don’t worry. Our active systems are relatively easy to set-up and use and the real benefit, better sound quality is evident from the moment you play music on them.
