Description
A RARE AMERICANCLASSIC The Dynaco SCA-35, the only integrated valve amplifier made by the very successful American tube amplifier company Dynaco. Whilst very popular in the USA, these are rare in the UK. This model was introduced in 1964. An online review on TNT-Audio.com praises its enjoyable sound: ‘Overall, the SCA-35 is a wonderful integrated amplifier and can be listened to for hours and hours.’ (https://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/dynaco-sca35_e.html) This particular unit has the American 120V power transformer, but it works well in the UK with a simple 240V to 120V voltage transformer which is readily available from Amazon, eBay, etc. It is fitted with the original two-prong USApower cord. ALL VALVES INCLUDED· 2 x ECC83s (Matsushita and Mazda)· 2 x ECF82 (Mazda and KK)· 4 x EL84s (Electro Harmonix, Golden Dragon, unbranded and Zaerix) REPAIRS AND UPGRADES The unit has some cosmetic damage, but it has been repaired and rebuilt. It is in working order with the following upgrades: The output transformers have been replaced by Oxford Electrical Products transformers (part number D29A09F) with ultralinear taps, just as the originals. These are made in Oxford, UK. The old phenolic printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been upgraded with new, high quality fibre glass ones, designed and made in the USA by respected audio engineer David Gillespie. The power boardshave been redesigned and remanufactured to use easily available ECF80 0r ECF82valves in place of the much scarcer 7199 valves. The preamp board, with facilities for record playback, is as per the original design, but reproduced on a new fibreglass PCB board. The original power supply has been replaced by a new, modern capacitor board which incorporates Gillespie’s EFB (Enhanced Fixed Bias) circuit. This supplies increased power storage and converts the EL84 valves to fixed bias operation for increased power and reduced distortion. The front controls have been upgraded with new high-quality knobs and the old power on/off bulb indicator has been replaced with a bright LED. The loudness compensation switch is disengaged because it requires a specialised volume control potentiometer. The one in this unit was faulty and had to be replaced. These pots are now available from the USA so this control could be reinstated quite simply, if desired. The previous owner cut the rear panel to replace the input sockets with new gold-plated onesand the output screws with banana sockets. This was done rather clumsily, but the replacementsockets are convenient and the cut in the rear panel is not visible from thefront. Because of the popularity of Dynaco tube amplifiers in the USA, spare parts are readily available for the buyer who would like to restore it to mint original cosmetic condition. DOCUMENTATION Copies of the original Instructions for Assembly and Operation, with pictorial diagrams and the assembly and installation guides for all four new D Gillespie Designs boards are included. CONDITION While the chassis has been cut in places, the amp has been completely rebuilt and is in working order. If collected, this can be demonstrated to the buyer. Shipping is at the buyer’s own risk, but it will be well-packed. The valves will be individually and securely wrapped and placed inside the cage. SAFETY If shipped, it should be visually inspected before use to check that there is no transit damage, e.g. wires shaken loose. Because of the high voltage inside the chassis, the amplifier should always be operated with the cover on and securely attached.
