NOTE: In order to remain within Ebays listing policies and to avoid potential keyword search spamming, we have added an asterisk * where necessary in the text below. Thank you! This sale is for a Drake SW8 desktop / portable receiver manufactured by Drake and is the 28th unit produced in July of 1997 (year-month-product id-production#) during the production run of 1994-2000. It is a later serial number 7G12950028 that is desired and in demand from hobbyists wanting the enhanced version of this receiver. Since this SW8 is one of the later manufactured units, it includes a number of RL Drake upgrades such as: Extended coverage into the longwave band. Earlier units would cover down to 500 KHz. This unit covers down to 100 KHz Better antenna matching of the telescopic antenna for stronger signal gain. RL Drake upgraded the reception for the receiver when using the telescopic antenna with improved antenna matching from 1995 onward Sideband selectable synchronous detector. Earlier units had a respectable sync detector, but after 1996 RL Drake upgraded the SW8 to include a sync detector that would use either the upper or lower sideband. This feature is especially helpful in avoiding side channel interference. If your bandwidth filter does not allow for reduction of interference from an adjacent station, you can engage the sync detector, and in combination with the bandwidth, generally avoid most or all of the interference from the offending station. The SW8 is a wonderfully made American product that performs exceptionally well in so many different areas. Because it can be used with either the telescopic antenna or connected to a fixed station antenna, it has a lot of versatility. Some people refer to it as a portable R*8 receiver. While this is not actually true, there are some similarities allowing for such a comparison. Let us review some of them for you and give you a little background on the SW8. We have fully tested this Drake SW8 and it works perfectly with no issues or shortcomings. Sensitivity was good when tested using both the onboard telescopic antenna and an external dipole antenna. There are normally a few issues that need to be verified upon considering the purchase of the SW8 receiver. One of the common issues with these SW8 units is the display not showing proper contrast due to poor contacts with the LCD display against the front panel. This receiver did not have that issue. The telescopic antenna on SW8s are known to slide out of the base. This antenna was extended and retracted and did not show any issues with operation, but owners are to be cautioned to not pull out to strongly when extending the antenna from the bottom section/base. (The SW8 antennas can fail over time if care is not taken as the base crimping will weaken and the antenna can fully separate if not careful.) Wear on the front panel especially so that the lettering is rubbed off is another item to be watchful of. The lettering on this radio is good overall with no noticeable wear. These SW8s can make use of 6 D cell batteries. The battery compartment is made of plastic that can break if the batteries are shipped inside the compartment. We have had to replace a couple of these battery holders in other SW8 receivers. The battery compartment is in beautiful condition. Handle can be broken. These SW8s have a handle that can lock into position for carrying or to prop up the receiver during use. The handle on this unit locks to enable the receiver to be tilted up toward the user during operation. We have taken some time to detail clean the SW8. Upon observation, we noticed only minor marks and signs from previous ownership. Please review our pictures for specific cosmetic condition. The price of this SW8 has been set based on overall condition and desirability. Included in this sale of the SW8 receiver is: low noise AC adapter copy of the Drake SW8 user manual (post 1996 version) Passport Whitepaper review QST review Oct 1994 (amateur radio magazine) Electronics Australia review July 1994 Passport review 1995 (Passport To World Band Radio) Passport review 1996 Passport review 1997 (retested) Passport review 1999 Short Wave Magazine review May 1994 WRTH review 1995 (World Radio and Television Handbook) EEB catalog page copy (Electronic Equipment Bank) Passport Advertisement copy 1995 Passport Advertisement copy 2000 Drake SW8 brochure copy #1 Drake SW8 brochure copy #2 Drake SW8 brochure copy #3 Universal Radio advertisement CD containing over 414 MB of documents and information The R.L. Drake Company was established in 1943 during the height of WW II and proved to be an innovative leader in the engineering and design of amateur and shortwave radio products. Mr. Robert Drake produced a unique amateur radio sideband receiver and took the plans to Hall*icrafters and Nation*al Radio. When these firms showed no interest in his design and product, he built the radio under his own name. The first order for 100 units was placed by Universal Services, now known far and wide as Universal Radio. Thus, the R.L. Drake Company had a very modest beginning, but eventually their product line grew wider as they showed a knack for great designs. The Drake Company discontinued their line of amateur and shortwave radios in the early 1980s when Japan flooded the market with portable units that had digital readouts (like the S*ony ICF*2001 and ICF*2010 to name a couple) and concentrated on the home satellite market. However, the hunger for sturdy, well-designed amateur and shortwave equipment never went away and Drake once again entered back into the market in 1991 with the announcement of the R*8 receiver. The success of this unit was then followed by the SW8 and then upgrades to the R*8 with the R*8A and R*8B. What makes the SW8 especially appealing is that it is a desktop communications receiver that has portable capability. This is uncommon for those DXers wanting great equipment, but also with a degree of portability. The Ya*seu FRG*7 built in the 1970s also offered an onboard DC power supply, but was considerably heavier than the microprocessor SW8 and does not offer digital readout along with many other updated features. In addition, E*ton manufactured the E*1 which had many features as found on this SW8, but the E*1 has a history of spotty reliability. Not so with most Drake products. Thus, if you want a receiver that will give you killer reception, portability, and durability, the SW8 is the ticket. Because the very handle that props up the radio can be rotated for carrying, this SW8 can be transported to the cabin, the yacht, the RV or any number or places where AC current is not available. Additionally, the SW8 is an excellent receiver to have for emergencies since it can operate off of readily available D cell batteries. The SW8 takes 6 D cells in the bottom compartment and the dial lamp turns off after 15 seconds to extend the life of the batteries. The SW8 is capable of receiving transmissions from 100 KHz to 30,000 KHz and can be used in AM or lower or upper sideband. This means that it can tune into AM radio, marine, amateur radio, and international shortwave broadcasts. If that werent enough, this receiver is also capable of picking up both the 88-108 MHz FM band and the 118-137 MHz air band. This is unusual for a serious receiver to pick up all of these frequencies. Typically, desktop units will not pick up broadcast FM transmissions. That makes the SW8 especially attractive for you can listen to whatever receiving band strikes your fancy at the moment. For our personal use, we dont believe that we have ever tuned using the air band. We live in a rural area and air traffic is sparse. However, we really enjoy shortwave listening. Here in the States, we have been raised on TV to a great extent and AM and FM to a lesser degree. The world of shortwave is a well kept secret and that is a shame. On any given night, we generally tune into about a half dozen broadcasts from overseas that are broadcast in English and that give great news, commentary, drama, cooking lessons, travel info, interviews, language lessons, music, and much, much more. The music alone can keep you entranced as we will frequently tune into Radio Romania or Voice of Turkey for music and then re-tune later in the evening to Cuba for some late night island sounding club music. While shortwave is broadcast in a wealth of languages, many of the programs are in English and thus you as the listener are offered the opportunity to hear music other than oldies or FM top 20 hits. The best way to describe international broadcasts are PBS style programs offered with an international twist. The SW8 is equipped with some great features: 70 memories to capture your favorite frequencies keypad for direct entry of frequencies backlit display illumination headphone jack tone control to shape the sound to your preference great sounding internal speaker (uncommon for communications receivers) dual clock / timer for local and international time convenient up / down step tuning choice of 3 IF bandwidths to avoid side channel interference and balance fidelity scan feature to select stations from the memory synchronous detector (sideband selectable on the later SW8s such as this unit) One of the nicest features is that Drake built the SW8 with a synchronous detector. During broadcasts, it is quite common to get what is termed selective fading or distortion. No problem here...just hit the AM Sync button and the station signal often improves noticeably. As already mentioned, this sync is one of the later versions that offers sideband selection. Thus, if you are listening to a station and getting side channel interference, you can choose the side of the band that is not being interfered with for optimum listening enjoyment. Keep in mind that if you live in an apartment or plan to use the receiver in an RV or boat, you can use the on-board telescopic antenna. While this antenna will not offer the very best reception that one might experience using an external antenna, using the telescopic antenna still provides respectable reception. If you live in a place where you can erect an outside antenna, the reception of the SW8 will knock your socks off. The antenna does not have to be fancy as even a random wire about 30 or 40 feet long will make a huge difference. Thus you have 3 antenna options...a PL-259 connector for coax cable, terminals for plain wire, or the on board telescopic antenna. If you would like to do some more research on this receiver, you may want to look at eHam where 13 reviewers give it a 4.7/5.0: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/600 (copy and paste this link into your internet browser) Dxing.com offers some basic information about the SW8, but also rates it a 5 out of 5. http://www.dxing.com/rx/sw8.htm (copy and paste this link in your internet browser) Please use the Ebay shipping calculator to determine your shipping cost. We have offered and sold around 180 of these R8B units on Ebay and have a lot of experience in testing and in verifying proper operation. This particular receiver came to us as used and with some cosmetic marks from prior ownership. We have provided HD pictures for you to view this receiver in great detail. Please review our pictures for specifics on cosmetic appearance. Electronically, we have fully tested this R8B and sensitivity and overall performance are outstanding. We did not detect any issues or shortcomings with the receivers operation. We typically sell an excellent cosmetic R8B for around $1299 here on Ebay and have priced this unit lower to recognize that it has some marks on it preventing it from being in above average condition. The Drake comes with:AC power cordcopy of the user manualcopy of the service manual Drake R8B advertisement copy - Passport 1999Drake R8B advertisement copy - Passport 2000Drake receiver brochure - original Drake R8B sale flyerPassport (to World Band Radio) review copy - 1998Passport review copy (retested) - 1999Passport review copy (retested) - 2003NASWA (North American Shortwave Association) review - Jan 98WRTH (World Radio & Television Handbook) review copy - 2000Passport R8B Whitepaper reviewfinally, included is a CD that contains the user manual, service manual, promotional materials, reviews, Joe Carrs Antenna Handbook 4th ed, RxPlus control software, schematics, and moreThe price of the Drake receiver is set at a selling price based on its desirability, condition and availability. The R8B is no longer manufactured, but the receiver is so highly regarded that the selling price on used R8Bs have remained at an elevated level due to interest and demand. Let us talk a little bit about the R8B. This receiver was one of RL Drakes last great offerings to the DXing hobby. Drake began its foray into shortwave receivers with the nice, but modest SW4 receiver. Now 25 years later, Drake brought out the R8 receiver in 1991. It was well received by the market, but did have its shortcomings...some were ergonomic issues and others were functional issues. Eventually Drake introduced the R8A in 1995 and then a couple of years later, they hit the nail on the head with the R8B which was introduced in 1997 and was produced until 2005. Here is a list of improvements of the R8B over the R8:Improved Ergonomics: Single key presses will select your mode and bandwidthMore Memories: 1000 memory positionsFaster Scanning: Scan 40 channels per secondAlphanumeric Display: Program names may be displayed on the front panelDisplay & Entry Frequencies: User programmable in KHz or MHzCabinet Feet: Front panel tilt via a metal bailEvent Timers/Clocks: 2 Timers. The time may be programmed to remain on at all timesImproved AGC: The AGC has a smoother attack for improved SSB listeningTone Control: Expanded control of high frequency rangeFM Receive Mode: New highpass filter to reduce sub-audible tone squelch signalsLine Cord: New detachable power cordExpanded RS-232 Control: Allows customized reports of frequency, mode, memory, channel, name, and signal strengthRL Drake no longer manufactures high end ham and shortwave gear, but their legacy for quality equipment will live on with the likes of the R8B. This receiver has won lots of recognition from various authorities within the DXing community and rightfully so...it is one HOT receiver...offering the benefits of high sensitivity, choices of selectivity, synchronous detection, passband tuning, an effective noise blanker, multiple modes of reception...AM, FM, USB, LSB, CW and RTTY, two VFOs, two clock times (local and universal), choice of antennas from the front, 1,000 presets for memories, and a preamp for the weak signals. The R8B covers Longwave, AM, Mediumwave, Marine, Shortwave, Ham, and CB frequencies. An optional adapter can be purchased to allow the receiver to pick up VHF frequencies. In Passports White Paper review of this receiver their final evaluation is that the R8B deserves an overall rating of 5 stars or superb. We will quote from their summary:The Drake R8B receiver, a revised version of the now discontinued R8A and R8, offers superior performance for hour-after-hour listening to news, entertainment, and music from afar. It is one of the relatively small number of radios on the market with both selectable sideband synchronous detection and a wide choice of bandwidths--both major pluses in enhancing fidelity. The R8B offers worthy audio quality that can be even more fully appreciated when listening through headphones or a suitable outboard speaker. The R8B eliminates virtually all our performance and ergonomic concerns about the R8 and R8A. This new and presumably final version combines unusually capable program listening performance with excellent DX capabilities within its price class. This flexibility, along with attractive pricing, has propelled the Drake R8 series into a position of overwhelming market dominance among world band receivers.Bottom Line...The sensibly priced Drake R8B is a nicely rounded receiver with nearly everything done the way it should be. It is equipped with five well-chosen bandwidths, selectable-and double-sideband synchronous detection, passband offset, variable notch filtering, and a wealth of other goodies that perform as they should...along with appropriate ergonomics and superior factory service. While there are other receivers that are a skooch better for program listening or DXing, or have comparable ergonomics, there is no other receiver that does quite so nicely in all three categories, much less at the R8Bs price. Little wonder, then, that this is the worlds best selling world band tabletop receiver. Here are some reviews on the R8B in case you really want to research this unit:https://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/494 (copy and paste link into your internet browser)This unit works on multiple voltages so can be connected to AC in a variety of other countries other than the USA and Canada. At this point, we believe that we have given you what info we have on this receiver. This sale is for an uncommon Drake SW8 carry tote. This sale does NOT include the SW8 receiver which is shown inside the bag only for visual reference. We had one of these bags years ago for our personal SW8 radio and had no idea how uncommon it would one day become and had sold the bag long ago. From time to time someone will inquire about this tote and we have had difficulty obtaining another to offer for sale. In our 15 years of selling radios on Ebay, we average having one of these totes for sale about once every two years and it is a scarce accessory item. Since the SW8 receiver is portable and likely to be slugged from home to work to cabin to DXpedition, etc, RL Drake offered a padded carry tote with web strap handle to offer protection in transit and by virtue of the web handle, make carrying the SW8 easier. As you can see, the tote bag is in customary Drake blue cordura nylon and has the Drake insignia on the front lower left. Theoretically you can either use the web strap for carrying the receiver, or if extended, placing the strap over the shoulder. However, some users will find it just as easy to grab the handle on the SW8 receiver for carrying and allow the padded carry tote to protect their SW8 from bumps and bruises. This tote has a practical application, but has also been favored by collectors of RL Drake equipment who may want it to enhance their SW8 receiver. Cosmetically, the bag appears to be in excellent condition with only minimal signs of previous ownership. It comes with a slip of paper from RL Drake advertising the availability of the bag. Please use the Ebay shipping calculator to determine your shipping cost. This cost includes proper packing materials for safe delivery and insurance cost against damage or loss. You may use the shipping calculator to determine your shipping cost. Please keep in mind that this cost may not include any import, customs, or VAT fees. This Drake receiver is in very good cosmetic condition with only a few small scuffs and scratches. This unit works beautifully and has the optional VHF converter installed. This one is ready to join your station! SHIPPING/PACKAGING: All orders ship within one business day. Regarding our packaging, review our feedback and youll see that many buyers describe it as the best theyve experienced on eBay. We use high quality boxes and have invested in a $5000 InstaPak foam-in-place system for use on larger items. Rest assured, youll receive your item on time and in excellent condition! Please keep in mind that shipping costs include more than just the postage itself. Theres also insurance, signature confirmation (for transactions over $750), and packaging materials. We apologize if the shipping quote seems steep, but these expenses really do add up. Sure, we can skimp on packaging and waive insurance to bring the cost down... but is it worth it? We think not. Lastly, if the sum of all these expenses is significantly less than what you pay, we will refund the difference. WHATS INCLUDED IN THE SALE: You will only receive what is shown in the photographs. If you do not see it in the photos, it is likely not included in the sale. That includes manuals, packaging, power cords, accessories, and so on. If you have questions about what is included, please ask before making a purchase and well be happy to clarify. RETURNS: If youre unhappy with your purchase for any reason, you can return it within 30 days of delivery. We will provide you with a prepaid shipping label, however it is your responsibility to ensure that the item is well protected. If a returned item is found to be damaged or incomplete (missing parts/accessories), we reserve the right to issue a partial refund. Also, the original shipping paid at checkout will only be refunded if the order was found to be not as described. If youve ordered the wrong item of simply changed your mind, we will not reimburse the cost of shipping the item to you. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: As of June 13th, 2022, the only international shipping service we offer is the eBay Global Shipping Service. I apologize for this, but too many items are lost in transit and this ultimately costs us a great deal of money. ABOUT US: Our company, Ham & HiFi, is located in Sparks, NV. Almost everyone in the shop is a licensed ham operator, some of whom have been licensed for more than 50 years. The owners call is KG7LOV (good on QRZ). Weve been selling used equipment on eBay for nearly eight years, and in that time weve received well over 20,000 feedback with a positive feedback rating of 99.9%! Most of our equipment comes from private collections and estates we purchase throughout the United States. We strive for customer satisfaction, and rest assured that well do our best to ensure youre pleased with your purchase.
