For sale is a Vacuum Tube Logic VTL Maxline Preamplifier Line Stage Control Amplifier fitted with two Amperex Bugle Boy 12AT7 tubes. I have had this preamp for a few years as part of a collection I am working on. First audition sounded great paired with a VTL 50/50 Stereo Tube Amplifier from the same collection. I was a little confused when I discovered that when the balance control was turned fully right or left, the opposite channel did not go silent. I have since learned that the balance control affects the negative feedback and I guess that means it is not in the direct signal path. Looking on the back panel I noticed the balance/gain adjustment pots and set them for the best gain/balance first with a scope and finally with a voltmeter. Listening again the center image was spot on. Turning the balance control shifts the image slightly to the right or left but in my listening space the knob centered is best. Using efficient speakers this was one of those “whoa! This sounds great!” moments. I will be listing the amplifier next.
