Their soundstage is phenomenal—so balanced and detailed that I haven’t even thought of upgrading since I bought them . They easily outperform everything I’ve owned before, including my more recent speakers by Avalon , audio physic and newer kef From top to bottom, the Vortex Screens are sweet and precise, though the single 8” woofer can be pushed to its limits with demanding movie explosions. Still, they do everything else so well it’s hard to fault them. These earlier first models, made in California, feature time-aligned mids and tweeters in a design reminiscent of Vandersteen, with stretch cloth covering the upper modules for a sleek look. The craftsmanship shows—Von Schweikert utilized Dynaudio and Audax drivers paired with his own expertly designed crossovers. Even today, they hold their own against iconic speakers like Thiel, Snell, and the Vandersteen 2c, as noted in the glowing 1989 Stereophile review . The condition is used with no noticeable defects. The cabinets are in almost flawless condition, you would have to look hard to find imperfections. These are a 2 way speaker system with a 6.5 woofer and a 1 silk dome tweeter. All speakers are operational. No cracking or dry rot in the surrounds.
