Vintage Akai 4000D Reel to Reel Tape Recorder. Comes on, plays and records but seems to only work in stereo mode, the 1-4 & 2-3 track mode doesnt seem to work but having no experience of this its possible I may be using it wrong. Also, speed is ok with large reels (except when it nears the end) but smaller reels make the mechanism run slow or grind to a halt. I think this is due to the tape not being gripped as well as it used to be. Comes with the speed changing capstan, 1 rubber reel retainer and the original manual.

Vintage Akai 4000DS MK-II Reel To Reel Tape Player Selling as Spares Or Repair. A couple of bits bent and I didnt want to risk them breaking by trying to straighten them up. It does power on. It is in excellent and fully working order having recently been serviced prior to sale. All the internal belts have been replaced, capstan motor cleaned and oiled, old grease has been removed from moving parts and re-lubricated, the record/play heads have been demagnetised and a brand-new motor run capacitor has been fitted.The old reel table felt has been fully replaced, so you can be sure that it rewinds, fast forwards and plays perfectly. It has also been fitted with a brand-new freshly manufactured pinch roller. Record and playback all sound outstanding! The old VU meter bulbs have been upgraded with brand new Ice Blue LEDs giving it a new and unique modern lease of life, while still maintaining its original vintage characteristics. Please note: that the LEDs look brighter than they actually are due to my phones automatic Brightness and White Balance. The outer casing and front fascia are both in excellent condition showing minimal signs of previous use. An absolutely beautiful machine! AKAI 4000D THREE HEAD STEREO TAPE DECK VINTAGE REEL TO REEL RECORDER. I’ve tested the machine for playing a tape and it works fine. As you can see there is some smoke damage to the machine I cleaned the face and under the discolouring was tarnishing on the stainless steel face, I tried cleaning this off too but to no avail. I took the face plate off and everything seems to look fine inside, no rusting or corrosion but again there is smoke damage inside. All the knobs and switches work, I’ve tested the playback ability of the item and it works fine, plays at the right speed, the rewind, fast forward, play, pause, stop all work work, the counter works and resets, the VU dials work and light up. Only thing I’ve done to “fix” it is I’ve replaced the screw on the stereo selector knob as the locking screws threads had collapsed- seems to be a common problem as I’ve seen a lot of these sell without the knob, luckily it was still on the machine when I got it. I do have a video of the machine working and I will be shipping it with the tape as well as a second empty tape spindle.

Vintage AKAI 4000DS MK-II Reel-to-Reel I have tested this item and the play, fast forward and rewind are all working as they should.However when playing the sound quality is not great and when some modes are selectedits just white noise so this will need looking at.
