This is an Audio by Van Alstine (AVA) Omega III EC stereo preamplifier. It is in excellent working order, include the owners manual, and has always been in a smoke-free environment. This is an exceptionally flexible and good, neutral-sounding preamp. Many of the features are described below. Feel free to ask questions. As can be seen in the pictures, there are 5 hi-level inputs: Tuner, CD, VCR, Spare 1, and Spare 2. (Most manufacturers use the terminology of “Aux” rather than “Spare” but the function is the same. This terminology is borrowed from the usage that Dynaco had in its preamps.) The “Special” input has been configured as a high-quality RIAA phono input. In addition, there are facilities for hooking up 2 tape decks. Switching allows listening in 4 modes: Stereo, Mono, left channel only to both speakers, right channel only to both speakers. There is a switchable EPL loop that allows insertion of an equalizer or other external processor. The “Mute” switch reduces the volume substantially without having to adjust the main volume control, in the event of a conversation or phone call. The tone controls can be switched out to provide a “straight wire” path around them. The preamp has two additional invisible features. 1. The preamp has two sets of main outputs. Set 1 is regular phase. Set 2 has reversed phase. By feeding the power amp with one channel from each, that results in reducing the load on the power supply of the power amplifier. Normal phase is then restored for listening by reversing the polarity of the speaker connection on the channel that was fed by the Set 2 output from the preamp. 2. The tape outputs are buffered. Most gear has un-buffered tape outputs, which means that the electrical characteristics of the tape equipment can affect the impedance and voltage loading of the source from the Selector switch. The buffers isolate the source, so that it is unaffected by anything on the tape output side. Please see my other listings for audio gear and other items

Great amplifier from AVA, these rarely show up used.. This amp is great with tough loads especially Maggies etc. Folks love the midrange, vocals are very lifelike and beautiful. Bass is tight and fast. Franks designs are amazing values. This one was never overdriven. A 12AT7 triode front end is coupled to a fully complementary power MOSFET output stage. The stock JJ Electronic tubes are quite musical, so there’s no compelling reason to tube roll. No, it doesn’t sound like a tube amplifier, but what sets it apart from a host of solid-state designs is its soulful midrange and ability to retrieve music’s drama and tension. Tack on decent spatial delineation and you have the making of a successful hybrid design. It’s a complete package featuring low distortion, superior speed, killer bass, and superb dynamics. The treble is somewhat closed in, and tonally, harmonic colors are on the dark side of reality, requiring careful system matching. At its best, the 600R can sound much like a $20k power amplifier. I have accumulated hundreds of pieces of audio equipment over the 40 years I serviced and restored. Some are being sold as is and other are being restored by me. Lots of vintage parts too This is a Dynaco ST120 power amp. It is the 98th one I have done in my career. These are great amps and at one time I had 20 of them in my storage area. Getting down to the last ones which are not in great physical shape. The chassis was really rusty in some hard to reach spaces and my usual chrome cleaner/polish was not helping very much. I stripped everything out and had the chassis sand blasted and then powder coated in a dark gray. New gold input jacks are installed. The boards were completely rebuilt with all new electrolytics, any out of spec resistors, and semiconductors. The output transistors were checked and replaced as needed with the correct transistors. The power supply was rebuilt using Frank Van Alstines design with uses a mosfet regulator. Fuses are added for each channel B+The filter caps were replaced with almost 3 times the value of the originals. The output caps were replaced with Dan Joffees replacements with much higher capacitance. This results in tighter and deeper bass. The amp is then run for 7 days in my shop and then run on my audio analyzer and scope. Look at the scope pictures of the sine and square waves at max output. This amp is ready to serve for another 40 years. What you see is what you get.Please look at all the pictures carefully and ask any questions you might have, as there will be no returns. The original were discrete Bi-polar transistors. The new circuits are F.E.T. OP amp based. ------------------------------------When Van Alstine redoes a PAT-4 preamp he takes all the original boards out and throws them away. He then installs his own designed and built boards and only used the chassis, transformer, input and output terminals switches and tone controls. He installed ALPS stepped volume and balance controls. It is basically a new preamp in the old chassis. Audio by Van Alstine Omega III 250 based on Hafler DH 200. This is a later version of the complete rebuild by Audio By Van Alstine. I have recapped the unit with the exception of two non polar caps. The grounding scheme has been redone using a five lug terminal strip. Fewer wires thus go to the ground buss wire between the two big caps, a source of hum. The big 10,000 mfd caps are from Dynaco Dan. Smaller caps are Nichicon, 10 caps were replaced. The case looks good from the front, there is some old shipping damage on the back of the fins on one side, some damage to the same side bottom of the case. The bottom damage was (mostly) flattened with some wood blocks and a big screw clamp. I had this in my system for several weeks, very impressive amp which deserves the best preamp, speakers and sources. This sale is the the lower 48 states only. I will not sell or ship overseas. I have a heavy duty double box for the item, the fins will be protected with cardboard surrounds. The amp will be bubble wrapped and tight in the box but with flexible packing materials. On Sep-07-23 at 04:56:46 PDT, seller added the following information: Added note: Bidders should be aware that the amp produces a low-volume zing sound through one channel on shut down. This is common to other AVA conversions of this amp. Recapping did not eliminate this quirk. The B+ and B- voltages are 61 volts, zero DC at loudspeaker terminals. I left it on all the time. The power cord has been replaced with a much larger polarized version.
