For your consideration, is this Balanced Audio Technology VK 51 – SE tube pre-amplifier. I am the third owner. The unit is in very good cosmetic condition. It is not perfect, if you examine the unit very very closely, you may find some minor surface imperfections. That said, there are absolutely no large dings, scrapes, or gouges that would be associated with careless ownership or poor treatment. I have tried to be extremely conservative with my appraisal of the cosmetic condition. This unit received a new set of tubes in early 2023. It sounds fantastic. I am making a more permanent move to a solid state preamp that I prefer, hence my reason for selling. As far as tube preamps go, to my ears, this is one of the best. Balanced Audio Technology manages to provide a little bit of the “romance “of tubes with the general focus of good power filtering and solid state presentation. There is definitely a distinct sound here and it is nothing but complementary to a variety of speakers and power amplifiers. I have a non-original Balanced Audio Technology box to go with this amplifier. I have the original remote control, and I have a printed copy of the manual. Beautiful just serviced Signature SRA 4 tube Amplifier made in Milwaukee by Brian Bienfang and also sold out of Sound Investments which is out of business- tried to research this model but couldn’t find much. Think it is modeled on the Nobis model also made by Brian, but a deluxe version. Gold Lion Tubes made in Russia…Also not sure of how many watts per channel, but think it is 35 or 70 if comparable to the Nobis. The high tension rail incorporates new smoothing capacitors, which are half the ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) of the previous supply capacitors. These new devices use the latest manufacturing techniques complimenting the high speed power supply. The class A input stage utilizes its own dedicated solid state power supply, as does the fully balanced driver stage, featuring dedicated transformers these stages assist the amplifier to achieve maximum transient response without any phase shift. All signal paths are hard wired with PCOCC and silver cabling. Component quality is of high standard, selected for maximum performance and reliability, featuring 1% metal film resistors from Vishay, Roderstein and Holco and high quality polypropylene, film, and foil capacitors. For long life and reliability each Monoblock is fitted with an electronic soft-start, ensuring a gentle power-up sequence, without causing stress to the tubes as the stiff power supply comes on line. The chassis is hand-crafted from one piece of sixteen gauge non-magnetic high purity stainless steel. A new double-sided PCB with 3 ounce copper on 3/32 fibreglass, offer the tube bases mechanical and electronic stability which is important in a device that warms and cools as often as a tube amplifier. The double sided through plated connection also improves coupling with the remainder of the circuit and is the best alternative to hard-wiring. The output stage utilizes four EL34 pentodes, operated in Ultra-Linear S form, which is the only type of circuit to provide the lowest amount of total harmonic distortion. The high performance output transformer has been developed over the last two years to create an optimum match between modern EL34 output tubes and the load it is designed to drive. For your consideration, is this exceptionally clean and brilliant sounding tube preamplifier from Balanced Audio Technology. It’s true that this is an older design from the company, but that doesn’t take anything away from the sonic merits it exhibits which, in my opinion, are highly relevant even in today’s listening environment. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, I will state that the only reason why I am selling this unit is because I have just finished shooting it out against a VK-51SE (a much higher end model offered by the same company). I have even included a picture of the two units together to corroborate the story. So, while this newer more expensive unit does offer some improvements with soundstage, background and image separation, I have to tell you that the overall differences are not tremendously substantial. This VK3i offers such an incredible value at the price point on the used market today that I would absolutely and totally recommend it to anybody looking for balanced tube pre-amplification. If you do a little bit of research on some of the audiophile forums out there, you will find a lot of people corroborating these claims. Again, there are gains to be made going up the food chain in BAT’s product line, but if you can’t afford to play that game, you are really not going to be missing out on what I would call a “world class” listening experience with the VK3i. So there’s my sales pitch, take it for what it’s worth. I’ve tried a lot of gear… I am by no means an expert, but I’ve spent a lot of time listening to products in the “value class” and the VK3i is an impressive offering to say the least. This particular unit is about as close to mint condition as I can describe. I have rated it a nine due to age, but cosmetically it is quite impressive. The unit functions perfectly. It has a brand new set of Tung Sol 6V6 tubes and a brand new matched quartet of Svetlana 6922s. I don’t think there’s any more than 100 hours on these tubes I have the original owners manual, as well as the original torq case screws. These were swapped out for Phillips units so that one could tube roll a little bit easier. If you have been looking for a superb example of this unit to add to your collection, or to be the cornerstones of your system, I urge you to look no further. This unit did not come with a remote control from the factory. Several months ago, I called the BAT service dept. and asked about getting a remote control working with the preamp. They advised that they no longer sell the chip that you need, but it was easily acquired on Mouser. I bought two of these chips, but never got around to installing either one. Apparently, once the chip is installed, you need to program a generic remote, which I didn’t feel like doing. So, there is no remote, but I will ship the chips to you, so that if you have the desire, you can program a generic remote control. I have pictured the chips. Unfortunately, one channel has ceased to function, and the issue lies within the amplifier. This is evident when you remove the cover and inspect the two sets of fuses (4 in total). Two of them on one side have blown. I replaced them with identical-sized fuses, but the problem recurred. These fuses protect the speakers and is not the one located on the back of the unit. Additionally, its worth noting that this unit includes the optional $500 remote control, which is fully operational. While I wouldnt consider myself an audiophile, Ive always had a deep appreciation for music throughout my life. My challenge in repairing this unit and bringing it back to working condition is my desire for a sleek and modern interface. I primarily use music streaming services like Tidal and Spotify, and Im sending their audio into a room with limestone floors, large windows, and limited décor choices, as approved by my wife.
