Technics RS-M255X Stereo Cassette Deck With dbx Noise Reduction DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY! The deck chatters when fast forwarding and rewinding causing the tape to lose and regain tension rapidly and harshly. This WILL ruin tapes. There is a spring that sits behind the main reel gear that is missing a clip, so proper tension on the gear for high speed forward and reverse is missing. We also believe this deck will need at least some capacitors replaced sooner rather than later. Its a spaghetti mess of wire inside also. We did fully disassemble this deck, cleaned it, painted the top cover and replaced the belts and pinch roller. This deck seems to play and record okay but really does not like low quality tapes. We are selling this as a parts or repair project only and are not accepting returns for any reason.

Tapes recorded in dbx will not work in non-dbx cassette decks. This deck features dbx disc pass-through allowing you to playback dbx encoded vinyl records without needing to record to tape first. DBX does not like worn, heavily used, low quality tapes. We tuned this deck to TDK Studio Master Type I specifications. TDK tapes should work the best. Any type/brand should be fine for non-dbx recordings. Do not use Sony tapes in this deck. There is a slight dent in the front bezel as seen in the photos. Works and sounds great. Please see photos. Its still an analog technology, it still suffers from unwanted noise, it still eats a tape from time to time. These are flaws of the format and not necessarily an indication of a faulty cassette deck. We test our cassette decks for several hours using a combination of very old, worn tapes, new old stock tapes, pre-recorded original tapes, and custom made tapes from our own new tape stock. Only when a deck can make it through a test cycle without any major issues, and without eating a tape, do we post them for sale. Despite all this, it will still eat a tape from time to time. We DO NOT guarantee your tapes will work and do not offer any return options due to specific tape problems. Buy at your own risk.
