This is one of the best-sounding cartridges I have kept for years.From my private collection:Dynavector Te Kaitora Rua Moving Coil Phono Cartridge This is a like new condition, sounds sweet, musical, works beautifully cartridge, excellent detail, stylus still sharp, cantilever and suspension is also in excellent condition. Used under 50 hours. Dynavectors latest cartridge is called Te Kaitora, Maori for The Discoverer. The name gives away the fact that Te Kaitora was collaboration between Dynavector New Zealand and Dynavector Japan. New Zealand have been responsible for a range of high quality pre amps, power amps and phono stages. They encouraged Dynavector Japan to design a no holds barred cartridge and Te Kaitora is the result. It is a nude design, that is it has no cover. This helps keep weight down, removes the chance of information losing vibrations and does not allow dust to collect as is possible in enclosed designs. The cartridge motor is attached to a titanium headblock. The cartridge is mounted to the arm via screwthreads in this headblock. Titanium was picked for high strength and lightness. Dynavector chose Oguras line contact Pathfinder (PF) stylus attached to a solid boron cantilever for Te Kaitora. The coils are of very fine silver wire wound using Dynavector founder Dr Tominaris own design of coilwinding machine. This set up gives a good output level of 0.25mV with a very light and agile coil assembly which leads to secure tracking and a quick sound. On the front polepiece there is another coil which is Dynavectors flux damper. Another unique feature to Dynavector is their softened magnetism, ferrous metal strips arranged to alter the magnetic field. These two features combine to eliminate the distortion caused by excess magnetic flux produced by the high energy magnets used in modern cartridges.Note: Te Kaitora means The Discoverer in the language of the NZ Maori people, Rua, is the second version. The wire for the coil has been changed to the PCOCC copper wire from the silver wire. It sounds a much smoother and has a much better musical performance.A titanium headpiece for maximum ridgity along with a miniature stainless steel bolt coupling the front and rear yokes to the magnetic circuit assembly.A 6mm long boron cantilever with the Pathfinder (PF) line contact stylus as used with both Dynavector XV-1s and XX-2.The ingenious square shaped armature and matching square shaped aperture in the front yoke providing much improved linearity in the magnetic flux distribution.I developed a very healthy respect for this delightfully smooth and transparent cartridge, but it took a day or three to fall in love with it. Theres very little to criticise about the sound per se, save some lack of vividness and power. Its very delicate, with a wide dynamic range, but it is also rather laid back in presentation.This is a real smoothie. This is the low output copper coil version, the original Te Kaitora had silver wire coils (see specs below). It has about 55 hours on it, beautiful very neutral sound. I bought this from a well known ebay and Audiogon seller who rebuilds Linn turntables. He bought it new and used it as a demo cartridge. He put about 50 hours on it and needed the cash, so he sold it. I wanted to compare it to my Zyx Ultimate Airy cartridge and put about 5 hours on it. In my system, I prefer the Airy, though many would prefer the Dynavector for its neutrality and more precise imaging. It comes with the box, mounting materials and papers you see in the first image. I tried as best I could to get good images of the cantilever and diamond. As you can see it is in mint condition. It retails for $3,650.00. The original Te Kaitora moving coil cartridge was the result of collaboration between Dynavector Japan and Dynavector New Zealand. The Te Kaitora allowed analogue enthusiasts to embark on a voyage of discovery to the outer limits of vinyl reproduction. The improved Te Kaitora Rua phono cartridge continues the journey by incorporating many of the newest features of its Dynavector stable-mates, the XV-1s and XX-2. The Te Kaitora Rua phono cartridge has even managed to improve on the originals silk-like treble and openness.
