A fabulous early 1980s vintage hi-fi system with a 1978 Sony PS-X4 record player and 1984 B&W (Bowers and Wilkins) speakers Please see the video of the system playing. The second photo is from a Sony 1983 catalogue showing the core of this system. This system has been painstakingly put together & will be sorely missed. It sounds fabulous throughout and has a nice mixture of superb quality and stable power; Having the volume to around 2 or 3 will fill a good size room. In short the system comprises of; 1983 Sony TA-AX6 current transfer amplifier. 1983 Sony 3 head TC-K555 cassette player with incredible play back. 1983 high end ST-J75 tuner in original box. 1983 Bowers & Wilkins DM 220i speakers. 1978 Sony PS-X4 XTAL direct drive record player in original box. (If a 1983 record player is preferred, Im happy to include a drawer slide Sony PS-FL3 instead of the PS-X4. The FL-3 would mount anywhere in the main stack, however I would recommend the PS-X4 + high end cartridge) This Sony PS-X4 XTAL lock direct drive record player from 1978 is fitted with an original Shure M95ED cartridge and new, well regarded Analogis black diamond stylus. This stylus would be worth upgrading to a Jico SAS to make the most of such a fine cartridge. The record player is no toy. It weighs over 10 KG, has gel filled feet to isolate, is incredibly stable and silent in use, built to a high standard. It would cost thousands to produce something this now. Cosmetically in very good well looked after condition. It has pitch control and runs at a rock steady 33.3 rpm. The Sony amplifier is of Takashi Kanai design, very clean and simple both in aesthetics and in use. It is a highly regarded & capable amplifier that is an absolute pleasure to use and listen to. The TA-AX6 has provision for both MC/MM phono type cartridges, gold plated phono terminal and tone control / direct switch. It produces 75W per channel with provision for 4 speakers. Very expensive in its day and seldom seen, certainly not in this condition. Very nice cosmetic condition, light marks and signs of use only. It retains its original box, packing and instructions. The B&W 220i speakers are lovely, they have one owner from new, and I thought them a nice match in sound quality and power rating to the amplifier. The grills are excellent, clean and with no pegs missing. The laminate on one speaker has a slight ripple to the top, this is not particularly noticeable at any distance. There are one or two marks, scuffs and dings typical of time and use but overall they are in well cared for condition. I have their original instruction booklet somewhere. The Sony TC-K555 cassette player is a high end 3 head deck. The playback is simply beautiful. Its a stable deck although the VU LEDs are not lighting and Ive not investigated why. It can also be slightly finicky about door position and this needs fettling from time to time which I can show the new owner when demonstrating. Cosmetically the fascia is in fine condition and the case has been re finished at some point prior to my ownership. Finally there is a well regarded ST-J75 tuner that is about a capable tuner as you could wish for. It offers absolutely crystal clear radio. Cosmetically in fine condition it retains its original box. This will make a lovely system for someone that would last a lifetime or more. Each component has been well looked after and it is rare to find 40 year old hifi in this condition.
