Heres one of the best phono preamps Ive personally ever experienced -- the Sutherland Ph3D. Hard to find nowadays as its been out of production for some time and doesnt pop up too often on the used market. Spend some time with this and youll see what it got such rave reviews -- extremely dynamic, detailed and revealing. Another amazing thing about this dual mono design is the DC power supply which is completely isolated from the rest of the system as it runs on D batteries (16, to be exact!). The manual says you can expect about 1,200 hours out of a set. Very simple setup with adjustable internal loading and 5 gain options to match your cart (100ohms to 47k ohms, 40db to 60db) to cover MM or higher-output MC carts. This one has been upgraded with the IC set as recommended by Sutherland for improved clarity and detail. The stock ICs are bagged and included if you want to revert it, but it sounds better with the current chips IMO. Well cared for, only used in a smoke free home hifi setup.
