Original pair of superb SPENDOR S3/5 monitors. After the legendary LS3/5a stopped production Spendor redesigned the classic BBC, turning the 12x7x6 cabinet sideways for a more modern profile. See Herb Reicherts Stereophile review.Same phenomenal midrange and top end, but without the euphonic, fake 120Hz bump in the original BBC iterations. So these are anemic below 70Hz, as expected of all small 5 2-ways.These are from my recently-deceased best friends system. I simply dont have need for them, as even my desktop is crowded. Steve migrated to a larger painting studio before his passing, so they were replaced by bigger new MoFi SP8 to fill the space with enough bass this summer. Yet he missed the glorious mids of these baby Spendors.Original grilles, packing and box. LS3/5a iterations are now in the $2-3k+/pr range. Up for auction is an original pair of Spendor LS3/5a monitor speakers. They are 15 OHM, with sequential serial numbers 11 and 12, making them among of the first pair of Spendors sold in the US. The production date of March 1982 is stamped on the inside of the speakers. I have upgraded the original speaker taps to WBT units, a significant investment. I included a picture of the original next to the new WBT which speaks for itself. This upgrade provided noteworthy sonic improvement. The LS3/5a is one of the most famous and highly regarded monitors ever produced. Perhaps the best indication of this is they have been in virtually continuous production since the early 1970s. Designed and manufactured in Great Britain for the BBC specifically for on-site broadcast monitoring, they are extremely durable and highly accurate through-out all but lowest frequencies. Add a subwoofer and you have a system that is competitive with others costing many times more. I would add that I have owned at least 6 pairs of LS3/5as over the years, most recently Falcon Gold Badge versions. The Falcons are my favorites, but these Spendors play right with them. Spendor LS3/5A speakers, one works one doesnt, and the non-working one was evaluated by a local high end audio store with the note on current condition shown in the photo. The working one was evaluated as working well at the time and a low offer was made to me for the two. I hung on to them and now want to sell them because Im doing a storage clear-out. I tested the working speaker today and it still works/sounds good, though I am not an audiophile. You can see the cases are not in great shape but my hope is these will be appealing to someone who wants a very special speaker at an uncommonly low price.

For more than 20 years, English manufacturer Spendor was licensed to manufacture the LS3/5a, a minimonitor designed in 1976 by the BBC. In 1997, when KEF stopped making the drive-units for the LS3/5a, Spendor designed a 0.9 (22mm) soft-dome tweeter, a 5.5 (140mm) mid/woofer, and a cabinet to put them in, and dubbed the result the S3/5, followed by a special edition, the S3/5se. A new mid/woofer and crossover network was the foundation of the S3/5s successor, the S3/5R, which was manufactured through 2010. Finally, the S3/5R2 emerged, with all-new driver and crossover technology.
