First preamplifier to accept a low level moving coil phono input directly with no additional gain stage. HI. Here is a very nice, great sounding Analog preamplifier by the highly respected American manufacturer: Spectral. This is the model DMC-5. If you know about this manufacturer, you know this was A State of the Art unit from the 1980s. The manufacturing quality is absolutely gorgeous. The component quality is from the finest available from the era. The phono stage is one of the finest ever made. It can easily take a low output moving coil Phono Cartridge straight in with no step-up devices. It probably had the widest bandwidth of any preamp of its time. It still works great, and is remarkably quiet. This is a piece of high end history: The first real production preamp from Spectral (the predecessor MS-1 was, in the words of designer Demian Martin a : “Kitchen table” piece). I haven’t used this unit in years, but I plugged it in and checked that inputs and outputs work. It is a gorgeous sounding preamp!On Oct-02-24 at 10:50:11 PDT, seller added the following information: Using a cd player. I just got thru testing all inputs. Switches are all clean and perfect, volume and balance controls are smooth (detented), and perfect, with no scratchy noises. I tested the phono input using a reverse RIAA network from Jeff Rowland Design Group and everything works as it should. And still sounds terrific. This is really a great preamp. I wouldn’t give it up, except that I rarely play records anymore, and I am using a tube phono stage. This unit deserves to be played regularly!
