Soundsmith Aida-M Ebony Stereo Cartridge (SSMIWAIDAM) with Ruby cantilever / Contact Line Nude MINT Boasting an OCL stylus attached to a single crystal ruby cantilever, the AIDA dances right through the most complex musical passages. This Medium Compliance cartridge, while sophisticated, is still compatible with a wide variety of tonearms and MM type phono-stages. Handmade in New York State-the AIDA can go toe-to-toe with cartridges costing three times the price. A triumph of Soundsmith Engineering, Stereophile Class “A” rated, a rarity at its price point – and for good reasons. The Aida employs a single crystal Ruby Cantilever and our Optimized Contour Line Contact Stylus; we did this to resolve the challenges of playing the inner grooves with the same level of confidence as the outer. How did we do this? The unique stylus shape of our OCL stylus has a “sharper” playing surface on the faceted diamond, allowing it to ride easily in the groove modulations of even the most difficult passages and high frequency information that other cartridges simply cannot trace. The result - a truly superb cartridge, surpassing top MC designs with air, focus and sound staging no cartridge at this price should be able to achieve.Review: The Aida is the second from the top in the Sound Smith high output line. It is a fixed coil design with a ruby cantilever and a line contact stylus. The output is 2.12mv. The version I have is a medium compliance with an ebony body. Mounting it on the SME M2-9 was a fairly simple proposition. The Aida is the first cartridge that I have owned that has a threaded body. Wow, talk about easy. Initial set up was fairly straight ahead and I had it up and running in no time. 1.3 grams of VTF, 47k ohms resistive loading, 100 pf of capacitance, 44 db of gain and a little anti-skate. I tweaked the VTA a bit by ear and finally settled on a spot where everything sounded right. The azimuth took me a bit to dial in perfectly but that is more because of my bad eye sight than any fault of the cartridge. There is a lot of talk about cartridge break in and it is real. I experienced it thoroughly with my OC 9. My expectation was that the first few sides may sound a bit rough but I was ready to weather the storm. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It sounded incredible right out of the box. As time has passed, I have heard some variations in tonality and soundstage which I attribute to the break in process but at no time has it left me disappointed. One of the most obvious attributes of this cartridge is how quiet it is in the groove. Unbelievably quiet. I had a few records that I thought were just noisy. Lead in groove and between cuts always had noise. It has all but disappeared on most of them, Surface noise is minimal on all but the worst records. I dropped the needle in the unmodulated groove of my test record and it is dead silent. The sound stage is huge. Both width and depth exceed any cartridge that I have previously owned. Instruments and voices are well defined and the space between them is open and quiet. Tonal balance is superb. There are no glaring peaks or low spots in the frequency response. Everything sounds very natural. No artificial emphasis on any frequency. I have about 60-70 hours on it now and it is really settling in. I feel I have it dialed in fairly well. I will say that if any of the adjustments are off, the Aida will let you know. As with any line contact stylus, proper set up is critical and minor changes will bring audible results. The more that I play it, I am finding that it is becoming more and more consistent from one listening session to the other. The best part is that I have played some records that I had written off as bad sounding records and at worst, they now sound good. At best they beg to be listened to again and again. Soundsmith cartridges always intrigued me and I am glad I had the chance to acquire this one. I am thoroughly impressed with the sound and the added benefit of being able to have it rebuilt at a fraction of the cost of replacing it makes it a win, win. Highly recommend.
