This is an auction for a used QUAD 33 Stereo HiFi Pre-Amplifier, serial no 32069. I bought this lovely pre-amp from its original owner in 1981, and it did me great service for over 20 years (it was serviced by Quad in 1992). I then put it away in its box, where it’s been ever since. I’ve just decided to sell it, and on testing it I’ve discovered that although it turns on and passes signal ok and the sound is fine,it’s definitely in need of a full service. In particular it has the following problems that Ive found (there may be more):- - the ‘Quad’ on/off light does not work- - the left/right balance on the outputs is flaky; sometimes it’s fine whilst at other times the left channel loses some volume- - the ‘EQ & Filter’ controls work fine, but the ‘Balance’ controls (Left & Right Mono switches and the left/right Balance slider) are similarly flaky, sometimes working and sometimes not- - most of the push-switches crackle a little on operation. Other than the light (which needs a new bulb) I believe that many of the problems might be resolved simply by a very good clean with Servisol etc, although a full service would definitely be preferable. It is in good condition albeit with scuffs, marks. Wooden panels are in fairly good shape . Refer to pics. One VU meter is non functional. Despite all my efforts to figure out what the problem is, I could not get it working again and on this model replacing it is not nearly that simple because of a very limited clearance inside of the deck to access everything. So for that reason I just left it as is. Video proof has been posted that that particular channel is working in both source and tape. It has been tested, serviced, calibrated and the heads were cleaned and demagnetized for the best sound ever. The mic inputs were tested and they work as well as the other inputs. The pots and switches were sprayed and the metal parts were lubed as well. Both channels are clear and superb sounding as well. The belts and caps were checked and they’re good. All the functions work and the VU Meters light up and jump like they are supposed to. The sound when recording at 7 1/2 IPS is very clear and better and wider sounding than the Source recording from, depending on the type of tape used and better at 15 IPS . The heads are also in very good shape which is obviously why the quality is awesome as well.
