Parent company Imagination Technologies was (and still is) a manufacturer of CPU and GPU microchips which built its first digital radio solely to demonstrate a newly-developed DAB decoder chip which it planned to sell to other manufacturers. However, the radio proved popular - after a redesign to improve its looks, it became the Evoke-1 and went into production, the worlds first sub-£100 DAB radio and soon becoming one of the best selling of all time. Today, Pure has become a company in its own right and is probably the best-known maker of DAB radios in the world. Whilst it doesnt offer sound quite comparable to the second generation Evoke-1XT with its upgraded hi-fi quality drive unit, its still remarkably good for a mono-speaker unit, aided by the clean and interference-free digital reception and surprisingly good response for a fairly small speaker: mid and high tones are excellent, but its also able to produce enough low note to add richness and depth - and if you want even better quality, there are external speaker and stereo line-out sockets round the back for easy connection to better speakers or hi-fi systems, as well as a stereo headphone socket for private listening. One of the main benefits of DAB radio is its simplicity - theres no more fiddling with the controls to try to stay on the strongest signal with digital as the radio contains a chip which is able to automatically locate the strongest signal, then track it and make adjustments if it becomes necessary. Set-up is just as easy: plug it in, switch it on, press autotune and itll locate all the stations available in your area (up to 50 in large parts of the UK) ready for you to decide which one you want. Whats more, its future proof - Pure are a founder member of the WorldDAB committee of digital radio manufacturers and all their products are compliant with the Digital Tick scheme ensuring that they will be compatible with any upgrades made to the digital broadcasting network in the future. Its also compatible with external aerials, by simply unscrewing the fitted telescopic aerial to reveal a standard co-axial type socket - very useful if you live in an area which doesnt receive a strong DAB or FM signal. Pure went for a retro look, which has led to the Evoke becoming something of a design icon over the years with many rival firms copying the wooden case and silver fascia. The handle is really there for aesthetics as, due to lacking the ability to be powered by batteries (theres a reason for that - digital radios are far more power hungry than conventional radios and rechargeable batteries werent up to the job back in 2002 when the model was introduced) its arguable if its truly a portable radio; however, its a well-made device and the woodwork is plenty capable of taking a few knocks whilst being carried from plug socket to plug socket. This one, like all the mains-powered electronics we sell, has been professionally PAT tested and certified safe and ready to use. Its also been bench tested and was found to be in full working order with all buttons and controls and the display operating correctly; sound quality is as expected. Its in very good condition visually too, without any damage other than the small number of light scuffs seen in the photos. It includes its original Pure mains adaptor with three-pin plug and user manual, but the original packaging has been lost been lost.
