When I bought it was fitted internally with additional circuitry and power cables for another device. They had also replaced the internal mounted adjustments(pots) for new record level and bias adjustments which were then mounted directly behind the facia, with holes drilled for access with a screwdriver on the RHS (something I didn’t notice when I bought it!). Anyway I have returned it to stock with all pots put back on the PCB and superfluous power cables, plus additional circuits removed. This has left some additional holes on the facia, lid and rear. Some marks and minor scratches here and there. It’s had : New belts Tape speed checked and adjusted. Mechanicals re lubricated. Heads cleaned and demagnetised. Pots and switches cleaned. All works, headphone, mic jacks, auto stop, etc Nice high quality deck built before pioneer went all plasticky that plays well BUT WITH ADDITIONAL HOLES! (5 on facia, 2 on lid, 2 on rear.) The CT-400 is an impressive looking and brilliant sounding classic cassette deck and was a top of the range model in its day. It has the superb fluorescent peak level meters, and can handle all popular tape types, including Fe-Cr, CrO2 and Metal as well as standard Type I ferric cassettes. Its beautifully engineered, with quality electrical components, oversize solenoids, an unusually large and heavy capstan flywheel (to minimize wow and flutter) and is clearly built to last! It also includes Dolby B noise reduction and has front panel mounted microphone inputs as well as a fixed level headphone output. This deck has been serviced, including replacing all the drive belts with brand new parts (there are three in total), cleaning the switches and potentiometers, and testing and cleaning the internal electrical contacts. We always check equipment carefully and aim to restore to as close to factory performance as we can. On this deck, that meant replacing the motor, the speed of which was not stable within specification, with a Matsushita MMI-6S2LS from November 1993 (considerably newer than the original part, and completely unused). This is a high-quality motor from the parent company of Panasonic / Technics, that would have been used by many high-end cassette deck manufacturers in the 1990s and has zero wear – meaning that it should give many years of trouble-free service. The electrical alignment has been checked, using a test cassette, oscilloscope, signal generator and external level meters. This process covers the recording levels, playback levels, meter calibration, bias and tape speed. Everything has been carefully tested and works exactly as it should. The lid, sides and back panel are all in very nice condition and there are no signs of the scratches and scuffs you often see on the top of stackable Hi-Fi equipment. The fascia is in fantastic shape, with only minor signs of use and the display is bright and beautifully clear - overall, there’s nothing here that it takes away from how great this deck looks when installed.
