Philips CDR 870 Recordable / Rewritable - Sold As Is For Parts or Repair - No Remote Unique Trickable Feature - Corrected in Later Models This unit was purchased to use for mixing down tracks from a multi-track hard disk recorder years ago. It was purchased specifically because of the trickable feature. CD recorders of the day could typically only use the more expensive audio blank CDs. With the Philips CDR 870, you could purchase a few audio CDs and computer CDs of the same brand. When recording, you could use the following procedure to trick it to use the less expensive CD: Place the audio CD in the tray Allow the unit to read the CD Carefully gently manually open the tray, pulling it open from the bottom Replace it with the less expensive computer CD, then gently push the tray closed Continue the recording process This worked well for many, many years. The last few years, it became less reliable. Even using only audio CDs created error codes when trying to read disks and finalize recordings. Our research found that perhaps it could be the laser failing. Due to the age of the unit, it didnt make sense to repair it. There was no remote control received with our original purchase.See photo #6, there are a few cosmetic scratches and blemishes on the case.
