We just serviced it by installing a brand new display and replacing the the volume encoder. Working perfectly and fully tested in our lab and listening room and includes the remote and the manual. For the money, I do not think you can do better, especially if your preferences are transparency in the sense of wanting the preamp to get out of the way and let the other components do their job. My set-up has been going through a major overhaul over the last couple of years. Circumstances have been such that I have been able to chase the level of performance that I did not think I could ever obtain. The last piece of this puzzle has been the selection of a preamp. Testing Process: We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure that there are no signs of heat stress or damage. Capacitors are checked for telltale signs of predictive failure including bulging, shrunken wrappers, or physical leakage. We also inspect the PCB’s for discoloration from resistors or transistors that may have been running hot. On vintage units we often spot check select capacitors for value and ESR. When we first power on a preamplifier we connect its RCA output to a Sencore PA81 Power Analyzer which simulates real world loading conditions and gives us an oscilloscope interface. The first order of business is checking that the volume control works smoothly throughout its entire range with acceptable channel balance. This is accomplished by feeding a 1KHz sine wave into one of the preamp’s line level inputs while monitoring the preamp’s output on an oscilloscope. We then switch to a 1KHz square wave to test the tone controls, loudness function, and filters where applicable. During this step we are watching for equal alteration of the test signal by both channels. This also helps us identify dirty controls that will need treatment. Once the basic line stage functions are verified, we test each input individually. This is especially important for devices that use relays to select their sources. If the preamp is equipped with a phono stage we test that as well. We use an inverse RIAA filter which allows us to feed a reference test signal into the phono input with the proper RIAA equalization and level. A square wave or sine sweep is uséd to verify that the device’s phono stage is faithfully reproducing the RIAA curve. If the preamp under test has balanced inputs and/or outputs these are tested as well. We finish up our bench testing with a listening test with our bench amplifier and reference speakers. During this test we check for hum or hiss that may not have shown up in earlier testing. We also check that all of the tone controls and filters perform as expected. If the preamplifier has remote control functions these are also tested. Preamps with tube circuits or complicated power supply topologies are connected at our long term test rig for extended stress testing under real world conditions. For sale is the Audio Zone PRE-T1 Passive Preamp which using the famous Stevens & Billington TX-102 Transformers. Audio Zone is a Canadian Audiophile audio outlet specialising in Hi-End audio gears. Peter Daniel and George Tordai are the two men behind the Audio Zone PRE-T1. They also used the same Stevens & Billington TX-102 transformers which are so famously used with the UK Music First Audio MFA Passive Preamp and also Bespoke Audio, a spin off company using the same philosophy. Apart from using the high quality S&B transformers the PRE-T1 also employs an expensive and high quality 24-position Elma switch selects from the transformer windings and dual mono two-pole toggles select the input. What this PRE-T1 stands out from the rest is that it has the unique extra 6db gain feature. This is extremely useful if your input has much lower gain or impedance eg. vinyl phono stage and low output DAC. With this it would lift the dynamic and pace to another level. The aesthetic presentation of the PRE-T1 is above all other products, not just a square box as normally seen with many other more expensive models. The PRE-T1 is housed with solid aluminium block. It looks like a powerhouse and indeed it performs like one!! This PRE-T1 is in excellent condition with no dents or oxidation. All parts are in pristine condition in and out. Most TVC passive preamp especially using S&B Transformers need long time to run in and I do believe this PRE-T1 has just done enough to peak now. Audition is welcome.
