I remember reading a review on these amplifiers and the reviewer already has plans ot keep his. If you know who and how these are built its easy to want one yourself. PASS amplifiers generally exist in 3 generations. The first, .5 and .8 (Dont ask to to explain those numers because I cant.). In this case the model is X-600 or first gen. Many owners never let these go and they are hard to find for sale since there is a lot of beleif that this was the best gen. Anyway, this customers fould a pair of X1000s so the 600s had to go. More then just an impressive 600 watts per channel (1200 at 4 ohms), these amplifiers will run in PURE CLASS-A up to 170 watts each! You NEVER use that kind of power, unless you want to damage something, so for all intensive purposes these are Class- A amps. They are also fully balanced from end to end. The PASS sound is colorless, yet imensly dynamic, yet warm at the same time. I guess we call that balanced. Because of this, the space and soundstage are massive. Everything is in control and convincingly real. Transparency and neutrality are at a reference level. Theres nothing these wont drive and do it well. These were in a system driving Wilson Alexandria XLFs at $200K/pair so they are capable of doing some amazing things. Our service departent went throught both amps and they are healthy and ready to provide years of enjoyment. PASS is also one of those brands that we RARELY see in our service department. Another nod to their fantastic build quality. If you look very closely in bright light, you can see very slight fading (no scratches) from the rubber feet of a similar Pass Labs preamp that sat on top of this. See photos. Works perfectly - with other Pass Labs components (XA160.5s and XP-20), this sounded very smooth and resolving with both Benz Micro Gullwing SLR and Hana ML cartridges. It has a very wide range of gain and loading, and is very quiet even with the .34mv Gullwing SLR. Has single-ended as well as balanced outputs. This is a great sounding phono preamp. Pass Labs X600 Monoblocks 600W of Clean Power The X600 is one of Pass Labs most highly regarded amplifiers, and its actually still made. I believe theyre up to version 8.Unfortunately at some point they changed the cabinet from this beautiful three dimensional appearance with the big gorgeous round meter to a much more conservative look. Im partial to these earlier versions.The circuitry did not evolve much throughout these revisions, and the original X600s are still considered to be an absolutely killer amplifier. Theyre capable of driving just about any load down to 2 ohms, no matter how difficult. It will deliver its power with ease and finesse.This particular example was well cared for by a single owner. They show no signs of wear, use, or abuse. They were owned by a famous musician which I will share to the new owner. There are no scratches or dinged corners or any discoloration. Thats really something considering their heft. They present extremely *extremely* nice. This X600 set is also an excellent match to the Pass X1 Preamp currently available.These will ship via freight on a pallet for safe transport. I believe theyre up to version 8. Unfortunately at some point they changed the cabinet from this beautiful three dimensional appearance with the big gorgeous round meter to a much more conservative look. Im partial to these earlier versions. The circuitry did not evolve much throughout these revisions, and the original X600s are still considered to be an absolutely killer amplifier. Theyre capable of driving just about any load down to 2 ohms, no matter how difficult. It will deliver its power with ease and finesse. This particular example was well cared for by a single owner. They show no signs of wear, use, or abuse. They were owned by a famous musician which I will share to the new owner. There are no scratches or dinged corners or any discoloration. Thats really something considering their heft. They present extremely *extremely* nice. This X600 set is also an excellent match to the Pass X1 Preamp currently available. We just serviced it by installing a brand new display and replacing the the volume encoder. Working perfectly and fully tested in our lab and listening room and includes the remote and the manual. Fully balanced design. This item belonged to a famous musician which we will share after purchase. From a Positive Feedback review written by John Brazier: With the absence of any criticisms, it is not a stretch to assume that I believe the X1 to be near the top of the price/performance ratio. For the money, I do not think you can do better, especially if your preferences are transparency in the sense of wanting the preamp to get out of the way and let the other components do their job. Testing Process: We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure that there are no signs of heat stress or damage. Capacitors are checked for telltale signs of predictive failure including bulging, shrunken wrappers, or physical leakage. We also inspect the PCB’s for discoloration from resistors or transistors that may have been running hot. On vintage units we often spot check select capacitors for value and ESR. When we first power on a preamplifier we connect its RCA output to a Sencore PA81 Power Analyzer which simulates real world loading conditions and gives us an oscilloscope interface. The first order of business is checking that the volume control works smoothly throughout its entire range with acceptable channel balance. This is accomplished by feeding a 1KHz sine wave into one of the preamp’s line level inputs while monitoring the preamp’s output on an oscilloscope. We then switch to a 1KHz square wave to test the tone controls, loudness function, and filters where applicable. During this step we are watching for equal alteration of the test signal by both channels. This also helps us identify dirty controls that will need treatment. Once the basic line stage functions are verified, we test each input individually. This is especially important for devices that use relays to select their sources. If the preamp is equipped with a phono stage we test that as well. We use an inverse RIAA filter which allows us to feed a reference test signal into the phono input with the proper RIAA equalization and level. A square wave or sine sweep is uséd to verify that the device’s phono stage is faithfully reproducing the RIAA curve. If the preamp under test has balanced inputs and/or outputs these are tested as well. We finish up our bench testing with a listening test with our bench amplifier and reference speakers. During this test we check for hum or hiss that may not have shown up in earlier testing. We also check that all of the tone controls and filters perform as expected. If the preamplifier has remote control functions these are also tested. Preamps with tube circuits or complicated power supply topologies are connected at our long term test rig for extended stress testing under real world conditions.
