Die Time Slip-Funktion eignet sich damit nicht nur für zu spät Heimgekehrte, die die bereits begonnen Fernseh-Sendung von Anfang an schauen möchten, während sie noch aufgenommen wird, sondern auch für Videofreaks, welche die Überspielung direkt kontrollieren möchten.Navigator und PlaylistMit dem Direct Navigator können die aufgezeichneten Titel direkt für die Wiedergabe angewählt werden.Die auf der DVD gespeicherten Aufnahmen werden in einer Liste mit Datum, Uhrzeit und Titel am Bildschirm aufgeführt. Sie können für die Wiedergabe oder zum Editieren (z.B. Titel eingeben) mit dem Cursor angesteuert und angeclickt werden. Aufgenommen wird eine Fernsehsendung mit einem einzigen Tatsendruck oder programmiert über Timer (z.B. mit ShowView). Insgesamt stehen 16 Timer-Programme zur Verfügung. Der Recorder wählt selbst zwischen den Aufnahmemodi von XP bis EP, so dass die programmierte Aufnahme mit bestmöglicher Qualität auf die Disc passt. Weitere Aufnahmequellen können extern angeschlossen werden. Auf der Frontseite sind ein AV-Eingang mit drei Cinch- und einer Hosidenbuchse für Video und S-Video sowie der DV-Anschluss untergebracht. Der Recorder von Panasonic erlaubt jedoch die Auswahl des DV-Tones, der aufgezeichnet werden soll: eine der beiden Stereospuren oder das Mixsignal. Der DMR-E20 kennt eine Funktion für automatische DV-Aufnahme. Diese arbeitet nur zusammen mit der DVD-RAM, also nicht bei Aufnahmen auf DVD-R. Ist diese Funktion ausgewählt, steuert der DVD-Recorder auch das DV-Zuspielgerät. Nachdem der Einstiegspunkt einer Aufnahme ausgewählt und die Aufnahme gestartet wurde, spult der Zuspieler automatisch zurück und gibt so einen Vorlauf, damit der Recorder präzis starten kann. Sobald eine Laufwerkstaste des DV-Gerätes betätigt wird, stoppt die Aufnahme.
