When the SL-D2 came along, they showed that they could do it a lot cheaper, too - $200 was a lot of money in 1979 (its equivalent to about $1130 today, in fact), but the SL-D2 it bought you was a lot more turntable than any of the Western factories could manage for the same price. Designed for home use rather than DJs, the use of a mostly plastic plinth allowed Technics to keep the price lower than DJ turntables, but metal wherever metal needed to be used prevents it feeling cheap - lift it up and its clear that its a solidly-built machine. That solidity helps keep vibration under control too, as does the use of a type of plastic the manufacturer called Technics Non-Resonant Compound - and all in all it does an admirable job of keeping shake to a minimum, though to really bring out the best of the SL-D2 many owners like to add after-market vibration-absorbing feet. One of the SL-D2s most popular features among more discerning audiophiles was its remarkably accurate speed control, generally considered to be top of the class back then and still comparable to the majority of quality decks today. If the speed does sound a little off (this one seems fine, by the way) it can be easily adjusted - look up reviews online and there are plenty of people out there who are still using SL-D2s they bought brand new 44 years ago and have never had to any sort of maintenance other than a quick speed adjustment 20 years ago. For on the fly adjustments, theres a +/- 5% pitch control too. Its compatible with a huge range of cartridges and styluses, including many that are still in production to this day. This particular one is fitted with an Ortofon VMS 2E featuring the legendary Variable Magnetic Shunt technology to reduce distortion and improve transient response, sonic depth and clarity. It looks good for plenty more use, though many serious record collectors with high value vinyl will probably want to swap it out for something newer - fortunately, the excellent VMS 20E will plug straight in. When examined closely, there are hints to make it clear that this is a vintage turntable - the odd light scratch and scuff here are there, some minor damage to the cover, a hint of surface rust on the tonearm lever, but all of these are very minor defects and there are no deep scratches or cracks anywhere - all in all, it looks a lot less than 44 years old. To me, speed sounds dead on though our electrical engineer felt it was maybe just slightly slower than it should be - as weve seen, this is a very easy thing to remedy. We hooked it up to a Yamaha RX-V567 amp and Mordaunt-Short MS30 combo to test the sound quality - which proved to be every bit as excellent as expected for this model, though just a touch of crackle when adjusting pitch suggests the pot might benefit from a dose of contact cleaner. All other features and functions, including the auto return, auto stop and strobe, did exactly what they should. The turntable has been professionally PAT tested and certified safe to use with the fitted mains cable and UK-type plug. Its also fitted with an audio cable tipped with standard RCA plugs.
