Philips N4308 4 Track Mono Open Reel Recorder The N4308 is a dual speed (4.75/9.5 cm/sec) 4 track open reel recorder produced in the 1970s by Philips. A solidly built unit with a pressed steel chassis, and a reliable AC motor/belt drive system for stable tape transport. This particular example clearly is in beautiful condition with just odd light scratches on the brushed panels (see photos).The wood cheeks have been stripped and re-veneered in Rosewood and lightly varnished which look beautiful on the machine.The dust cover has two intact catches with undamaged hinges (rare!) with a number of marks on the brushed panel. The lower cover, which is often missing on these units, is intact and clips unbroken. This recorder has been recently restored by myself and is now for sale after a 30 day test period. The recorder has been completely overhauled with the following areas attended to:- All drive belts renewed with correct square section belts.Both supply & take-up reel clutches renewed.Pause brake renewed.Motor removed, split and re-lubricated.All rotating assemblies removed, cleaned and re-lubricated.All Electrolytic capacitors checked for correct values & ESR and replaced where out of spec.Visual inspection of PCB and any suspect soldered joints cleaned and resoldered. Play/Rec head demagnetised, cleaned and azimuth aligned with factory alignment tape.Speed checked at both 4.75 & 9.5 cm/sec.Rubber mounting cushions for motor and chassis replaced.Potentiometers cleaned. Cabinet cleaned internally & externally.Wood Cheeks stripped and veneered. Both Playback and Record checked.Meter Checked and Tested. Supplied with 7 Take-up spool. Please beware of loft finds which are nearly always require extensive restoration and may have parts missing. This era (1970) of machine is notorious for the various rubber items to turn into a black sticky mess which almost always requires a complete strip down to remove fully.
