I wanted to dip my toes into the waters of low watt, but high quality audiophile amplifiers, and there is no one with more accolades in that market than Nelson Pass. Though his main company Pass Labs produces very expensive, high output amplifiers, his off shoot company FirstWatt focuses on low wattage, high quality, amplification. He is famously quoted saying The first watt is the most important watt. To encourage audiophiles to explore this idea, he created The Amp Camp Amp for a special event called Amp Camp in which 20 people built their very first amplifier from start to finish in one afternoon. The event was held outdoors on a lovely sunny day in California and all attendees walked away with a fully functioning amplifier and a smile on their dials. Though I wasnt present for this event, his directions and components have been posted online so anyone with decent electrical knowledge can build their own Amp Camp Amp at home. I built this particular amp, using the best parts available and supplied by DIY Audio in their Amp Camp Amp Kit. This kit retails for $359 and requires several hours of soldering and building to complete and is currently backordered in black. I have used this amp with several pairs of speakers from Klipsch, KEF (LS50), and several DIY speakers that I have built over the years. In every scenario the amp performed phenomenally.
