This Nakamichi RX-505 is a fun piece of audio nostalgia. The deck was completely disassembled and refurbished with new belts and lubrication. All electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with Nichicon FG, VR, and Muse series components. All of the switches were cleaned during the restoration and the heads were cleaned and adjusted. Everything works as expected. The auto-reverse mechanism is precise and very entertaining to operate. FF and REW are lightning fast. The Cueing controls perform flawlessly. The fader controls for recording work as designed. I do not have the equipment to fully prove the Dolby Noise Reduction system. I cannot 100% guarantee the the Dolby system but it does respond as I expect using test signals and basic intuition. Playback performance is excellent. The noise-floor hiss is as-expected and is well below audible at normal listening levels. I have tested the cassette deck for around 5 hours of playback (the automatic reversing makes it easy). Ill continue to exercise the deck to ensure the new owner will have no problems when it arrives. The cosmetic condition is what I would consider a very good 8/10. Some scratches are visible on the case and faceplate. The imperfections are mostly visible in direct lighting so please review the photos closely and if you have any concerns or need additional close-ups please let me know. Nakamichi RX-505 Unidirectional Auto-Reverse Discrete 3 Head Cassette Deck acquired from the family of the original owner. I tested the main functions of this deck, Play, FF, Rew, Pause, Reverse, etc. I couldnt test record without a blank tape, so that function is untested. I dont understand the functions of most of the controls and switches on this extreme machine, so I did not attempt to use anything I wasnt sure of. Play works and sounds great, FF/Rew are extremely speedy, the counter works as you would expect. Cosmetically there are some small marks here and there, but no eye-catching flaws. I would assume this cassette deck is all original. Before extended use, new belts and service are advised regardless of working condition. Rubber belts / soft parts were not made to last two lifetimes so as previously stated, even though this unit works and sounds terrific it should undergo a check-up. Please view the auction photos.
