This Nakamichi was top of the 480 series range when new, and cost a small fortune. This particular example appears to have been purchased by a person who really cared for his property, with the result that the only blemish is a very small knock to the lower left corner of the fascia. Otherwise it is unmarked on all visible surfaces, and only the usual age related surface discolourations one often sees on the base-plate. It is extremely rare to find a machine like this in such fine condition. The 482Z appears to have had very little use, with the heads and pinch rollers nearly unworn. I think that the owner had it serviced by somebody who failed to spot a failing transistor in the logic control, which affected both the LED level display and the recording function, and as a result, the machine has been dry-stored and broken, probably for some decades! I have repaired the logic faults, stripped and cleaned the transport in order to re-lubricate, re-assembled with new belts and FF/REW drive tyre, demagnetised, and fully re-calibrated to original factory spec. Recording/Playback tests are impossible to tell apart, and normal playback is typically Nakamichi - about as good as it gets!
