This is a very nice example of the hugely popular, great looking and fantastic sounding NAD 5420. With the classic super-clean NAD styling, this CD player looks and sounds brilliant and is in great condition The NAD 5420 was very highly regarded for its sonic performance. HiFi Review commented that the 5420 “…[put] up a marvellous musical performance, yet with critical material a tad more firmly controlled and better separated. Nowhere on test was this more obvious than with the AR jazz recording. Bulfunk has a vivid and strong presence, with excellent imagery in both planes and subtle phrasing reproduced without loss. The bass was strong and well controlled, but the calm, clear treble was perhaps the NADs most eloquent and impressive feature.” This deck been fully tested and professionally serviced, including cleaning and checking of belts and pulleys and alignments made where required. The laser has been carefully cleaned and tested, and the display backlight upgraded with LEDs (see below). It plays every CD in our test set, including CD-R disks, and has a really responsive transport. The laser, mechanism and electronics are all clearly in excellent shape. It has been inspected for electrical safety and put through a full PAT test, in line with current guidance. You will notice that many NAD players from this era are sold with faulty displays. This is because they were shipped with incandescent or electroluminescent backlights that have a finite lifespan and eventually fail after a number of years. This deck has been upgraded with a modern high efficiency LED backlight, solving this issue permanently. Cosmetically, this deck is in decent condition for its age. The lid has scratch marks, as we often find with stackable HiFi equipment, but of course these are unlikely to be visible once installed. The fascia is in very nice shape. There are signs of use in a few places, but nothing that really takes away the fantastic classic looks of this deck.
