Description
NAD 808 CC Centre SpeakerSpeech channel for cinema surround / home theatre Specification This is a nice little centre channel (dialogue channel) speaker for a home theatre or cinema surround system, originally intended as part of a compact system with NAD 800 series bookshelf speakers. It has three drivers: one treble and two bass. At the back of the unit, a small switch alters the frequency response between single boundary (positioned on the floor or on a table) or double boundary (positioned between two shelves, or in a cabinet). History I bought this new as my first venture in to surround sound. I didnt want to buy a whole system, so I added a centre and two rear channels to what I already had. I had always liked NAD products and thought this was a good place to start. It is much less tall than most centre speakers, and fitted the table the telly was on well. It did a good job, remaining in use until 2002, when I invested in a Linn surround system. Then it was packed away in its original box and stowed in the attic for 21 years ... until now! Cosmetic Condition Condition benefits from only set up once and not moved again until it was packed away. Ive handled it more taking pictures of it than at any other time. Its difficult to fault. The speaker cones look good, the foams are still in tact and flexible, the four self-adhesive rubber feet it sits on are still attached. The cloth grille is in good order. The badge on the grille is just as crooked as when it was new. The clips still clip it on. Theres not a lot more to say. Functional Condition It works. I connected it to the single channel of a high-quality stereo system, tuned the radio to BBC Radio 4, set the amp to mono, and listened to some chat. Speech came over loud and clear. Its not particularly bassy, but thats a good thing for a speaker thats likely to be set in a cabinet. It is a little warm in the mid-tones, but fine. The boundary switch made a subtle difference, dialling-back low frequencies a little when set to double boundary, and improving this colouration a little as well. I think best to ignore the label and adjust the switch by ear. Reason for Sale The attic floor is groaning under the weight of stuff kept in case it came in useful again. Theres no point it kicking around here any longer; time someone else made use of it and enjoyed it. I seem to remember it cost about £100 new. I gather not many were sold. Very few come up for sale, Worldwide. When they do, they sell for about £35. Starting bidding at £20, then .... International Post To any international buyers, I am relying on eBays Global Shipping Program for international post. This is where I simply post it to a UK warehouse and eBay take responsibility for the entire shipment from that point on: customs declaration, customs fees, shipping and delivery. I dont get to see or calculate those prices or delivery dates, but you do. I will simply promise to despatch it within 2 days of receiving payment in full.
