Description
This is an exceptional example of a very popular and highly regarded cassette deck that has been carefully serviced and tested. It is incredibly unusual to see vintage Hi-Fi equipment in such outstanding cosmetic and mechanical condition as this. As well as fantastic styling, in keeping with the usual NAD minimalistic look, it delivers excellent sound quality and has a really nice, responsive and solid cassette mechanism. The electronics in the 6220 are excellent, and include both Dolby B and C noise reduction and an MPX filter for off-air recordings. Audio input and output are via a set of built-in RCA L/R (phono) cables. NAD really put effort into the sonic performance of their designs, and in 1987, the 6220 earned Cassette Deck of The Year from What Hi-Fi. Their review at the time stated “The 6220 stood out as the best machine…. Could justifiably be looked upon as a first choice for the Audiophile..” This deck has been professionally serviced this week, including cleaning and checking all belts – replacing where necessary, cleaning the switches and testing and cleaning the internal electrical contacts. The electrical alignment has been checked, using a test cassette, signal generator, oscilloscope and external level meters. This process covers the recording levels, playback levels, meter calibration, bias and tape speed. It has been inspected for electrical safety and put through a full PAT test, in line with current guidance. In our experience of servicing and refurbishing these machines, we have found that there are two variants of the 6220. The first has a thin, square cross-section drive belt on the flywheel, which you normally find in budget cassette decks and in machines designed for light weight or small size (such as portable cassette players). The second (presumably more recent) variant of the 6220 has a flat cross-section flywheel belt, which is more in keeping with high-end machines. Having listened to many of these decks, the earlier variant with the inferior belt still sounds great, but the wow & flutter performance of the machines with the flat belt is somewhat superior. This particular machine is of the second variant with the flat belt and performs superbly. On back-to-back comparisons with source recordings made on good quality Type II cassettes, we found it hard to reliably select between the original and the recordings made with this deck. The tape transport has been checked, cleaned and demagnetised. All rubber parts have been cleaned and treated with Rubber Renue, which restores them to their original specification and performance. Everything works as it should and the deck sounds fantastic. Cosmetically, this deck is in near mint condition. The display is clear and looks fantastic, the front and back panels are as close to immaculate as we have ever seen. The lid is in almost perfect condition, and free of any obvious scratches or scuffs. Please take a look at the pictures. The mechanism and tape heads are in excellent shape, with exceptionally low levels of wear, and look to have seen only light use. Shipping will be by next day courier. It will be very carefully packed in a brand new double-walled shipping carton, and we usually ship out same or next day. Please check our feedback, and if you have any questions - just ask.
