What follows is a review for the former model released by the Chicago tribune in the 80s. Some details may not pertain to this model but it should give you an idea what to expect: Protons new AI-3000 is not just one particle but the whole atom of a stereo system. Its nucleus is compact and well constructed. It includes an AM/ FM stereo tuner, a stereo cassette deck that records on any type of tape and has Dolby B noise reduction, a programmable compact disc player and a 22- watt-per-channel amplifier. Proton surrounds this nucleus, which is the size of a fat receiver, with two compact satellite speakers. Multicolored lights and buttons, plus an amber, green and red LED (light-emitting diode) display, spruce up the basic black front panel. The supplied remote control commands the units basic functions. The Proton goes where few stereos have gone before. It fits in the den, dorm room and bedroom. Somehow Proton makes a rectangular black box look good. The reason may be in the shape of the cassette and CD windows, the layout of controls or the fold-down door at the bottom that hides the secondary controls. Even the curved, bent and ribbed remote bespeaks high tech and high style. After removing the two transit screws that lock down the CD mechanism and connecting the speakers, you immediately have music. The control layout, both on the front panel and the remote, eliminates confusion. The shape, color and position of the buttons logically define their functions. The CD player loads only when the 3000 is switched to the CD mode. A button toggles the display between track/index number and elapsed time. The player responds to commands reasonably rapidly, but the mechanism is audible during play. Another modest drawback is that you cant hear what youre scanning. The player lacks direct track access; you program up to 20 tracks by using the - and + buttons. You cannot program a single track more than once. The player ignores index points, which are track subdivisions. The cassette deck auto-reverses in both play and record modes and automatically senses the type of tape you insert. Proton intelligently hides the Dolby off button with the secondary controls, recommending that you leave it switched on permanently. The manual explains that most prerecorded tapes now come encoded in Dolby B and tapes you record should also be recorded in Dolby for optimum sound quality. A microphone jack permits live home recordings if you have a mike. The tuner section delivers highly respectable reception. Even in fringe areas, it pulls in quite a few stations with only the folded dipole antenna, which is a T-shaped wire provided with the unit. Although the AI-3000 omits a turntable, it does contain phono inputs that accept a magnetic phono cartridge; so you can always add a record player. The most annoying feature of the unit is its bright-green pilot light, which remains illuminated even when the Proton is off. If you plan to use the AI-3000 in a bedroom, you might want to cover it with a piece of opaque tape or get a service technician to snip its wires. The printed specifications of the AI-3000 wont impress avid stereophiles. Yet the whole sounds better than the sum of its parts. You can improve the sound further by substituting better speakers than those provided. Its $1,200 price really makes the AI-3000 sound terrific. Adjusted for inflation, this is a bargain when compared with all-in-one compact systems of a decade ago. You can obtain equal performance from a $900 rack system but with less versatility. Try hiding a rack system, or fitting one into a small space. If youre looking for an alternative to conventional stereo/hi-fi systems and cant afford a Bang & Olufsen, check out the AI-3000. A stunningly stylish, refined and rarely seen Monster of a machine weighing in at 22 Kilos !!.....the Legendary NAD 300 Receiver.I have strong, almost carnal feelings towards this stunningly beautiful machine and was tempted to keep her...alas I cannot justify these base unbridled feelings because....1)....Ive got a relatively new Vintage also stunningly beautiful Luxman 1050 just installed, I tell you, that rosewood is rather delightful, after letting my Marantz 1070 go....(see feedback below)2)...and most importantly...its too wide for my stand....3)....She, my Doreen, wont let me !! Extensively tested on CD Player and Turntable and what a glorious sound....when they talk of headroom I was a bit puzzled but the sheer power and control make that observation clearly evident...speaker separation is superb, as is bass, tone etc....lovely blue fascia lights and when switched to FM/AM the titchy tuning bar illuminates red...see what I mean about refined....Inside the Beast all looks good with no indication of stress to pots or caps...FM/AM reception is superb even without aerial fitted...with one fitted its crystal clear...signal and tuning VU metres all good and respond as they should...A truly special receiver in 8.5 out of 10 condition (cosmetically 9.3 out of 10, check the pictures)...with some minor flaws Ill list now....Main 4 way speaker terminal had come loose due to cracked plastic plate and screw fixings surrounds....so Gorilla glued together from both sides and screwed into place and all good now and sturdy... see last picture...barely notice its been touched and of course working as should..Red stereo light not working, havent got the skill to replace it myself...Im useless with solder..and its a bit too close to tuning string for my liking.Intermittent working of muting....when tuned to a FM station the mute button works fine but on others, phono, aux etc it does not, maybe a a dry solder joint ??And missing its original tuning knob so using a little knob...stop that !!...as a substitute....not ideal but works perfectly well...I have ordered a larger, more aesthetically pleasing one and will include in sale....when it does eventually turn up Ill include a picture...
