The asynchronous aspect of the V-Link has to do with its internal software and hardware that re-clocks and stabilizes the digital audio signal to eliminate timing variation or jitter that Windows and IOS inherently introduce into their USB outputs. Musical Fidelity is a highly-regarded manufacturer of audiophile equipment, and the V-Link was favorably reviewed by Stereophile magazine in 2011 (https://www.stereophile.com/content/musical-fidelity-v-link-usb-spdif-converter-0).
