The UltrAmp by MoFi is an outstanding audiophile component that you dont find very often for sale. Michael Lee designed an extremely musical preamp for MoFi. I found its holographic imaging to be its greatest strength. It is one of the most detail emitting preamps I have owned. I paired it with mono amps and later with 2 channel amps, all synced nicely with this preamp (I let go those amps to move to NAIM and LFD integrated amps). I havent used the UltrAmp for several years, storing it safely away in a closet in my listening room, thinking I would eventually go back to mono blocks. . . No phono stage, which was the normal trim option set by MoFi. I used different phono preamps with MM and MC pickups. Adding an internal phono preamp was an optional item the buyer could select when the preamp was custom built. From the web: The UltrAmp Line Amplifier and UltrAmp Power Amplifier are part of a new series of components from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, long a source of top-quality recordings. The units are hand assembled in the U.S. and tested by designer Michael Yee. The UltrAmp preamplifier has relatively simple features: A selector for six line-level inputs, a combination muting and tape monitor switch with positions for two tape decks, and controls for volume and balance. It does, however, have sophisticated electronics. Each channel of this dual mono design has a separate line stage plus a separate buffer stage for tape outputs to ensure that interconnect cables and tape recorder inputs do not interact with the source. The preamp does not include a phono gain stage, but one is available from the manufacturer at extra cost.
