Description
A minimalist discrete solid-state preamplifier with terrific build quality. While it is listed as parts, or not working - that is, sold as-is, it is working, but with issues. The selector and tape monitor switches are scratchy and intermittent, and the volume control does not track the two channels accurately (at low volume settings, the left channel gain drops below the rights). (Note: the balance control does not work like a conventional control but only adjusts volume between left and right by a few decibels - this is a design choice, see specs below). In other words, the electronics seem fine, but the mechanical bits need care, perhaps because it was in storage for decades. Its physical condition is nearly pristine. The volume and balance potentiometers are alps 100k and 50k. There is a single double-sided printed circuit board for the power supply (fully regulated throughout) and three gain stages. Input Sensitivities (1 kHz): Phono MC: 100µV, Phono MM 1mV, High Level: 100 mVGain Structure (1 kHz): Phono Section MC: 60 dB, MM: 40 dB, Line Section: 20 dBInput Impedances: Phono 47 kOhm (user selectible to any lower Impedance), High Level 50 kOhmSignal/Noise Ratio (A-WTD / UNWTD): Phono MC (ref.0,5 mV) 76 dB / 68 dB, MM (ref. 5 mV) 82 dB / 74 dB, High Level (ref. 500 mV): 100 dB / 94 dBInput Overload Level (1 kHz): Phono MC 15 mV, Phono MM 150 mV, High Level: InfiniteOutput Level: Rated 1V, Max. 16VOutput Impedances: Phono Section (Tape Rec.): 100 Ohm, Main Out: 100 OhmFrequency Response: Phono (RIAA Equ.): +/- 0,2 dB 20 Hz - 20 kHz, High Level: +0, 1 dB 5 Hz - 100 kHzBalance Control: +/- 3 dB each ChannelDistortion: 0.015% THD 20-20k Hz at rated output, any input/outputDimensions (inch/mm): 16,5/420 (W) x 4,1/105 (H) x 11,2/285 (D) In the 1990s, a former employee bought the company and still may be repairing, servicing and modifying these products in New Zealand. The preamp will be shipped in its original box. Sadly, there is no documentation or schematic. Still, an excellent example of 1980s high-end audio. Do not confuse it with Tag McLaren.
