MCINTOSH MQ-102 ENVIRONMENTAL EQUALIZER, Good condition. Works perfectly. All lettering intact. No rust. Very fine and light scratches all over the top plate only. Condition would be excellent except for the top plate scratches (so technically it is merely Good). The scratch visibility depends on the angle of viewing and the angle of light. From very wide angles it isnt visible at all. Despite the scratches, the chrome still has a near perfect mirror reflection which often hides the scratches. It is very hard to photograph the unit because it reflects the sky, me and my camera, the picture on the wall, the pattern on the sofa, even the terrycloth towel it is sitting on, etc, because of the mirror like reflections. The first photo was made in dim light inside and the second photo was made with dim light outside, these tend to hide the scratches. The third photo is reflecting the cloudy bright sky. The worst case is when you shine a light straight on it as in the fourth photograph. Then you can see it has very light and fine scratches all over the top, which seem to shift in prominence as you move the light across it. The side of the unit with the jacks has a perfect mirror finish but in the photo it is reflecting the terrycloth towel it is sitting on. I think the scratching resulted from my cleaning off some very fine dust with a dry cloth. If you look carefully at the photos of other units for sale you may see that many of them have similar flaws which are hard to see in the photos provided. It is really hard to photograph this unit. I purchased this unit used from a McIntosh dealer in 1980 and used it until 2005. It has remained inside my home. For this sale I have tested it on my bench and found it has very low noise (28uV A-weighted) and higher than 14V RMS maximum output, as shown in the oscilloscope photos for left and right channels. It has better measurements than many preamps. It will easily drive any power amplifier that takes RCA connections to full power. I have also tested all the inputs, outputs, and switches. This equalizer was sold for particular McIntosh speakers if you didnt plan to operate with corner placement, so it gives the appropriate boost for different non-corner locations. But they will work with any speakers when you can add an equalizer between the preamplifier and amplifier (or use a tape or processor loop) and need bass boost, so long as the speakers and amplifiers can handle the amount of bass boost applied, which is 0 to 17dB (in 4 steps) with this unit. The early mac speakers were so robust you could plug them straight into 110V AC, which they sometimes demoed at stores. If your speakers are not that robust you should only use the lower settings.
