Here is an opportunity to own two of (what some consider) the very best tapes ever made, irrespective of type. These Maxell XLI-S tapes are Type I, Normal Bias and are known as “Super Ferric” tapes. They are not Type II or Type IV (Metal), yet they are better than most Type II tapes, and even better than some of the Metals! These tapes will take considerably more in recording levels than the standard ferric tapes, will give you an excellent mid-range presence with great bass and very good high frequencies on almost any tape deck. Obviously, a high quality deck (with bias adjustment) will to take even better advantage of the tapes of this quality. Both cassettes in this listing are clean and in good used condition. J-cards have writings and their tear-away portions are removed. Original Maxell tape cases have some scuffs (no cracks). You will receive two cassette tapes as seen in the pictures. If you are not familiar with Super Ferric tapes, here is some background. Most Type I (Normal Bias) tapes are made with magnetic coating of ferric-oxide. Type II (High Bias) tapes are made with magnetic coating of [CrO2] chromium-dioxide (e.g. BASF). However, another way to produce a Type II coating is to have a Cobalt-absorbed ferric-oxide tape (e.g. Avilyn by TDK). The ferric-oxide on these “pseudo-chrome” Type II tapes had cobalt particles introduced in it for the purpose of modulating its electrical properties (the process known as doping) in order to have them operate on High Bias record setting. Type I Super Ferric tapes offer to rectify some of the inherent problems found in both Type I and Type II tapes. Standard Type I ferric-oxide tapes have a poor definition in the higher treble regions, while Type II chrome tapes (generally) have a relatively weaker bass response. The concept with the Type I Super Ferrics is to have a cobalt-doped ferric-oxide tape that will still operate on Normal Bias record setting. This would offer the user enhanced high frequency definition of chrome tape, plus the fuller bass of the regular ferric tape. Furthermore, Supper Ferric tapes have advantage of higher sensitivity, lower tape noise, and ability to take high recording levels.
