No user modifications are allowed with either unit.Many of our respected customers, aware of the sonic excellence of the PPA-l, have purchased both versions as opposed to other more expensive SOTA equipment. They have more than one type of phono cartridge or have made a change in their system. The Marcof PPA-1 is a copy of the Marshall Leach circuit that was published in Audio magazine many years ago. This unit is totally refurbished and upgraded by master tech Herb Ward. Premium Nichicon caps ( fine gold ) with polypropylene bypasss were installed along with two new sets of hfe matched complimentary pair low noise transistors. The battery holders are new, and the tin plated RCA jacks were replaced with gold plated jacks. The unit has been fully tested . It has 28 db of gain per channel with a measured THD ( unweighted ) of .02% with an input of .5 mv. This is an ideal MC front end when used with RIAA preamps having a gain of 36 to 40 db. The light blue anodized case is a little tired looking but this unit works better than new due to the component improvements. This unit typically performs better than many of the modest MC step up transformers in the $400 to $500 price range.
