Description
Attention retro-audio collectors !! For serious audio/cassttte deck collectors this is something to must own, as example of extraordinary way to design and build the cassette deck. This 231-model of Majak (or Mayak, lighthouse or beacon in russian) is the rarest even here in post-soviet countries. Most spreaded model of Majak was 233, but it has no semi-sensor controls, has a fluoresence VU meter instead of needels and has a stereo power amplifier inside, so not so much „deck” anymore. Please look to the pictures ! It is built like tank, has an ca 5 times oversized motor, the same is used for R2R recordes. It is strong and has well fixed speed (as far the power is 50Hz), but it gives also some (not too high) mechanical noise. The flywheel is largest I’ve seen, 90mm of diameter, capstan is 3mm diameter. Drive belt is 6mm wide. For the forward tension the toothwheels with felt clutch are used. For back tension is used never seen before an string break...But by torque measuring cassette it gives nice 60/10 moments. Cassette load is manual and is fixed well in the holder. The deck has solenoids and semi-sensor control, also wired RC is available. The autostop is optical, counter is 3-digit mechanical. The power transformer does not warm up, so is not undersized like most of western production. Please do not expect high audiophile sound quality from it, but it works very nice by it’s way, by good record sound is also good. It has a dynamic noise reduction but better to avoid it’s use, for better sound quality. Also, due quite hard rewind start it is recommended to rewind the cassette only from very beginning or end. To keep the authenticity, only the necessary/bad el caps are replaced. The belts are good, speed is correct, no wow/flutter by ear. The relative soft permalloy head has only very minor wear, allmost not visible. The deck is in fully working order, included 3 basic programme by ending of cassette. The record/erase function works ok for ears but no measurement or adjustment is done. For high quality record some Naka-Alpine-Tandberg-Grundig is better to use. The look is very good, only some minor signs of use on top and side cover. The front (aluminium) is allmost perfect. Weight is 9,5kg So, considering 40+ year age and variable quality of USSR components the overall condition can be considered as very good. Private sale. No warranty, no guarantee, no returns.
