Description
For sale is my pair of Magnepan 1.6QR speakers. Thesespeakers, standing at 67 inches tall, are in excellent condition. This is a unique pair of 1.6QRs. There have been a number of important changes beyond what the speakers were in stock form: 1. Addition of MyeStands, manufactured in Canada at Magnepan Speaker Stands - Mye Sound. The support struts of the stands have been sand-filled for additional weight and damping. 2. Thickening of the frames. Where the driver panel is attached on the main panel frame, material has been added to thicken out the frames. This is not perceivable just from looking at the speakers, because the original cloth ‘socks’ still fit as they originally did. However, if you pinch a stock speaker and then pinch these, the difference is evident. These frames are about three times as thick where the driver panel attaches. 3. Driver panel attachment is much more robust. On this pair, the driver panel is held solidly in place with a retention frame using constrained-layer damping between the driver panel and main frame. There are actually over 90 screws that you can’t see that solidly fix the retention frame to the main frame with the driver panel frame held very solidly between them. 4. Internal crossovers were removed and built into external boxes. All the components are the same. The crossover topology is original, the capacitors and inductors are the same ones that came with the speakers. A big improvement lies, however, in the connections. Binding posts are all now high-quality Cardas hardware instead of the originals. 5. The high-range panel protection fuse can selected or de-selected very easily. In one photo of a crossover with the lid off, you can see the high-range panel feed wire. Right now it looks like the red arrow, with the protection fuse removed from the circuit. If you want to put the fuse into the circuit, simply loosen the allen bolt and move the feed wire to make it look like the blue arrow instead of the red arrow. It takes about one minute.FWIW, I’ve never run them with the fuse. I’ve always provided the speakers a lot of healthy, clean power, and the need for the fuse has never been there. These speakers can be used in the following ways: • Single-amped • Monoblocks • Actively bi-amped (thepassive crossovers must be removed and an active crossover must be employedprior to amplification) They cannot be used passively bi-amped or bi-wired.I used them for some time actively tri-amped with external active sub-woofers using high-quality active crossovers. The crossover slopes used between the low-range and high-range panels were 4th order Linkwitz-Riley and I really enjoyed the results. I believe this extracts the best performance from the speakers. However, it requires the use of a stereo amplifier for each speaker (one channel for low-pass, one channel for high-pass), or 4 monoblocks. The sound is great, but it takes a great deal of cable management and a lot of floor space! Currently, the speakers are single-amped through the passive crossovers you see in the photos. I do have the original boxes. However, with the addition of the Cardas binding posts, I don’t believe the speakers fit in them anymore, and a cutout would have to be made to accommodate the binding posts. We can do this if you’d like. Shouldn’t be too difficult. Also, I have the boxes for the MyeStands and you are welcome to those. How do I extol the virtues of these speakers? Dynamic…midrange and midbass that’s to die for…clean…open. All the typical Magnepan features. These are a LOCAL SALE ONLY. I don’t mind if you have to delay for a few days or a couple weeks to pick them up. What I don’t want to do, though, is ship them. Also, any third-party pickups on behalf of the buyer will result in a cancellation of sale; I don’t want to run the risk of these speakers taking damage by a third party and then the buyer and I getting into a dispute because they were ‘delivered damaged’. If you have any questions, please ask. If you wish to see more photos of the upgrade process of these speakers, just let me know and I can show/explain everything. Thanks for looking.
