All of the controls have been cleaned and lubed with Deoxit D5 and/or Deoxit Fader. It is in near perfect condition and extraordinarily clean inside and out. The ugly wood grain metal case was painted with a textured black color to match the silver and black face for a truly beautiful look. There may be a minor flaw or two in the paint job, but it was properly done and looks fantastic. This is a very nice amp and Lafayette components fly under the radar. Its built like a tank. If someone wants it fine, if not, I enjoy swapping it out in my amp rotation. Its heavy for its size, weighing 10 lbs. Its very compact and can fit just about anywhere, measuring 12 x 3.75 x 9.125. It has 4 inputs; Phono, Tuner, Aux, and Tape; plus it has 1 Tape output. The Phono selector has a ceramic and magnetic setting. The balance control is part of the volume control. The manual is available online. Theres info online about companies that made components for Lafayette. Two names that keep coming up are Kenwood and Luxman, but I dont know who made this amp. This amp was made in 1970, before there were regulations about power output. Lafayette listed it as an exaggerated 100 WPC. The Hi-Fi Engine website lists it as 37.5 WPC, but realistically, its probably 12-15 WPC, which is plenty of power to drive a pair of efficient speakers. It can drive 4, 8, or 16 ohm speakers. This amp was also made before manufacturers eliminated the pop sound through the speakers when you turn it on. Compact speakers featuring the acoustic suspension design were all the rage in the 1960s and the big electronics catalogs quickly rushed their own house brand versions to market. The attractive Lafayette Criterion 25 and 25a speakers packed an 8 inch woofer into an unusually compact enclosure that retained the cubical look of the era. The speakers were a inexpensive introductory model -- its successors would offer better performance from rectangular enclosures with more familiar dimensions. But these Criterion 25s certainly boast cosmetic appeal and they had a better low end than most of their competitors from Radio Shack and others. Given the low price and small size ( 12X10X7), they sound reasonably good. High compliance 8 woofer with rolled edge suspension and 2.5 cone tweeter in a hand rubbed oiled walnut finish enclosure. We pair these with a a compact amplifier from Lafayette Radio Electronics. Their Model 324A was a popular entry level amp that packs more than the usual features and build quality into a compact unit. The basic are there, but there are also a loudness contour, capability for remote speakers, switched and unswitched AC ouputs -- all uncommon in similar small amplifiers.. Like many manufacturers Lafayettes advertising grossly inflated the power of their amps before FTC regulations in the mid-1970s put a stop to meaningless power specifications.Without measurement of continuous watts per channel to 8 ohm speakers, its hard to tell what their real power was -- an amp advertised at 50 watts in 1970 was first revised downwards to 38 watts --- but realistically we are looking at something like 8 watts rms per channel.That is enough to produce a good listening experience with the Criterion 25 speakers. This compact amplifier (11x8x4) weighs in at a hefty 8 lbs. Unlike many of their low end competitors, the Lafayette amps featured heavyweight construction and a conservative and consistent circuitry design. Lafayette built most of its amps and receivers with a single Japanese subcontractor and from the late 1960s to mid-1970s they offered many inexpensive amplifiers that performed well. Generally they were larger, heavier and clunkierthan many of their competitors and overall build quality was good, with an emphasis on reliability in the long run. Solid value. Cosmetically the line evolved from an unattractive industrial look to more sophisticated styling more in line with higher priced competitors. I am quite fond of their series of black faced amps from this period : the LA-125B, LA-150, LA-324, LA-375, LA-450, LA-750 and the LA-950. Performance is more than acceptable -- yes they are not quite up to the big name brands of the era -- but they still provide necessary features, good construction, long term reliability and better than average sound quality. Rare vintage Claricon CD-4 four channel demodulator for CD-4 Quadradisc encoded records. This Demodulator is almost identical to the Lafayette version, with the exception of the Claricon version using a knob instead of push buttons. This was purchased from the estate of an avid Quadraphonic collector who curated his items well and took care of them. Please see photos and examine them carefully for cosmetic condition. This demodulator has been serviced. I cleaned all switches and potentiometers with deoxit. Using a good CD-4 record, the demodulator light comes on and it decodes 4 channel surround sound and appears to work as it should. I have been using this in my showroom to demo CD-4 albums without issue. Comes with original owners manual. ***SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT CD-4! You MUST have a hyper-elliptical or Shibata type stylus for your phono cartridge as well as low capacitance cables/arm wiring on your turntable in order to properly decode CD-4. This is because CD-4 is encoded at 30khz (above audible frequencies) and the diamond needs to be very very fine to be capable of playing it back. If your CD-4 light does NOT light up, you may have issues with your turntable or cartridge, or the carrier could be damaged in the record groove.**** Please do your research and make sure that this is the item that you need, because I do not accept returns for bought by mistake, I didnt like it, or any other buyers remorse reasons.
