Another manufacturer that probably has a greater name among amateur radio operators than shortwave enthusiasts is the company called Kenwood. Cosmetically, the R-5000 is used and you will see some a variety of marks on the front panel. The receivers covers have been repainted by a previous owner and the color seems to match a platinum color appearance. We have provided HD pictures which you can enlarge and view for the purpose of viewing the cosmetics in detail. This receiver is being offered at a bit lower cost than is customary for us due to the cosmetics.This receiver has been fully tested and works wonderfully with no known issues other than the common key bounce. There is more information toward the bottom of this listing regarding this issue. Please note that a previous owner has installed a cooling fan and attached cooling fins to increase the cooling surface area of the power supply. These two mods dramatically lower the heat produced by the power supply. The R-5000 is known to generate a lot of internal heat from this power supply which can degrade the internal components over time. But the modifications prevent this same heat built-up and greatly prolong the component life. Please view the two pictures at the top of this listing showing the fan and added heat sink fins.We also want to point out that this receiver has the optional DCK-2 kit installed which permits this receiver to be operated off of a DC power supply. Operation using DC current will eliminate most of the internal heat and will generally lower RF noise commonly found from a dirty household AC current line. This item is the VC-20 or VHF converter for that Kenwood R-5000 receiver that you may have. The VC-20 has been tested and operates amazingly well. Once installed, the frequencies will appear on the readout like the HF frequencies. The range for the converter is 108 to 174 MHz which allows the receiver to have expanded frequencies to pick up local emergency channels, air communications, national (NOAA) weather channels, and amateur radio band of 2 meters. For some people, being able to pick up those upper frequencies is not important, but for others, it will bring a whole new facet for their listening and expand the capabilities of their Kenwood. The VC-20 is pretty easy to install and comes with a copy of the installation sheet to guide you in the process. In addition, the VC-20 comes with the mounting brackets and screws that secure it inside the receiver. You do not require anything but a properly sized Phillips head screwdriver to install and about 30 minutes of time. Basically, you remove the top cover of the Kenwood R-5000, attach the 3 cables inside the Kenwood to the VC-20 specifically for that purpose, and then mount it using the included brackets and screws. Finally you replace the cover and then you are ready to use the VHF unit. This is not a technical installation and should be able to be performed by even the least technical person as it requires no soldering. Up for auction is a well maintained Kenwood R5000. Item turns on, and all buttons seem to respond when pushed. On the right side (see photos), a couple of the knobs are bent and will need to be fixed. They still respond as of now, including turning off and on the radio speakers. This item is the VC-20 or VHF converter for that Kenwood R-5000 receiver that you may have. The VC-20 has been tested and operates amazingly well. Once installed, the frequencies will appear on the readout like the HF frequencies. The range for the converter is 108 to 174 MHz which allows the receiver to have expanded frequencies to pick up local emergency channels, air communications, national (NOAA) weather channels, and amateur radio band of 2 meters. For some people, being able to pick up those upper frequencies is not important, but for others, it will bring a whole new facet for their listening and expand the capabilities of their Kenwood. The VC-20 is pretty easy to install and comes with a copy of the installation sheet to guide you in the process. In addition, the unit comes in an original VC-20 box, though please note that the box has writing on the top. In addition, the VC-20 comes with the mounting brackets and screws that secure it inside the receiver. You do not require anything but a properly sized Phillips head screwdriver to install and about 30 minutes of time. Basically, you remove the top cover of the Kenwood R-5000, attach the 3 cables inside the Kenwood to the VC-20 specifically for that purpose, and then mount it using the included brackets and screws. Finally you replace the cover and then you are ready to use the VHF unit. This is not a technical installation and should be able to be performed by even the least technical person as it requires no soldering. If you look at the picture, you will see that the VC-20 is in excellent condition. We have tested this VC-20 and it operates beautifully with great sensitivity! Another manufacturer that probably has a greater name among amateur radio operators than shortwave enthusiasts is the company called Kenwood. Cosmetically, the R-5000 is used but in beautiful original condition. The front panel is one of the nicest that we have seen in quite some time. This is not a perfect cosmetic unit, but it is above average and looks very nice. We have provided HD pictures which you can enlarge and view for the purpose of viewing the cosmetics in detail.This receiver has been fully tested and works wonderfully with no known issues other than key bounce on the #8 key. Generally we find on these R-5000s that all the keys will bounce. There is more information toward the bottom of this listing regarding this issue. In addition to the stock AM and SSB filters, this receiver has the optional YK-88SN filter installed. When available, we sell this optional filter separately for about $100 here on Ebay. The stock SSB filter has a bandwidth of 2.4 KHz and this narrow filter has a bandwidth of 1.8 KHz which enables the operator to have better selectivity. As is typical of desktop communications receivers, a good outside antenna is important to utilize the weak signal recovery of the R-5000. However, this antenna can be something as simple as a longwire, a dipole, or even a Wellbrook antenna.As you can see, the R-5000 offers a wealth of opportunities for the avid listener. It is an exceptional piece of equipment, but not without a weaknesses. The weakness of the Kenwood was actually two-fold. Virtually all receivers have a keypad for direct entry of the frequency. However, they are set up like a calculator or telephone keypad which is typically familiar to most users. The R-5000 keypad is set up in 2 rows and is a bit awkward to use. In addition, over time, the Kenwood R-5000 keypad was reported to develop bounce which means that you hit the keypad for a digit and instead of it registering one time, it may register two or more times. This can be more challenging for the user. The solution to this bounce is to remove the cover from the Kenwood and solder a couple of inexpensive capacitors to the circuitry. On the CD that we are including, there is a key bounce fix accompanied by excellent pictures. However, personally, we dont do direct frequency input all that often with the R-5000 so it doesnt matter as much. Our method of tuning is to use the 1 MHz up / down keys to quickly move between bands and then turn the main dial to tune the correct frequency. We find that this method of tuning can be done as virtually as quickly as locating the individual keypad buttons and pressing them. Other users have found the solution with installing the infrared remote control and using the remote instead of the buttons on the front.
