Once installed, the FM module will expand the receivers capabilities by enabling it to then utilize the FM mode during reception. There are certain types of signals in the HF receiving range that require this module and this would be considered narrow FM and thus not the wide FM used for commercial FM broadcasts. The remote handheld controller does show some marks from age and use, but the remote operates flawlessly.Not everyone will find this device to have meaning for their needs, but there are many who will be thrilled to add some control diversity to their Icom receiver. The advantage of this remote is that you can locate the receiver across the room (near an antenna input), but then control the receiver from a different spot in the room. Some people may locate the receiver on a shelf for reasons of space limitation and this remote offers a convenient method of tuning and controlling the receiver.Additionally, there are a number of people who may have physical or mobility limitations that prevent easy access to control the receiver. This remote can be a lifesaver to such hobbyists.If you own an Icom IC-R71A receiver, you know that it is a very capable receiver that can be enhanced with various modules and filters that Icom made readily available at the time that this classic receiver was sold to the public. However, now that the R71 is no longer available for sale new from Icom, it is virtually impossible to locate some of the upgrade modules and filters....this RC-11 is also very hard to locate.According to the directions, you can control frequency entry, listening mode (AM, LSB, USB, CW, FM, RTTY), slew frequency up and down in steps, power the radio on/off, turn volume up/down/mute, select the VFO or memory function and step through the memories, and choose between the A or B options for VFO. As you can see, this remote provides a lot of nice control functions for your receiver. Included in this sale are the handheld remote, the control board that will need to be installed, and operation directions. Installation is relatively easy and requires no soldering or technical skill. The installation directions can be found inside the owners manual for the receiver. Mounting screws are also included and attached to the board. Basically, you remove the covers from the IC-R71, then screw the board module to the metal accessory mount, and then plug in the board connectors. This is the classic Icom IC-R71A manufactured by Icom in Japan from 1984 - 1996. It is a sturdy unit being well made by the folks at Icom and thus holds up well to hours and hours of hard use. The knobs and switches all have a great feel that allows the user to have confidence in the controls. If you take a look beneath the cover, you will see that Icom designed these units to last. There is very little plastic utilized in the construction of the R71A and the circuit boards are well laid out and efficiently organized within the chassis. Overall, the receiver design reminds us of mil-spec equipment except that Icom sold this receiver in the consumer market for over a decade. Hobbyists still hold the R71A in high regard when seeking weak signals and in searching for those tough DX catches. In looking at the pictures, you will see that the receiver is used and does display a variety of marks from previous ownership. Most of these marks are seen on the covers. Please observe the HD pictures for specifics on cosmetics and feel free to email with any questions. Electronically, we found the receiver to be highly sensitive as it easily grabbed signals from all over the globe...literally. We tuned it to a variety of shortwave stations and then operated it on the amateur bands to verify the controls. Its design and operation has earned it a reputation as a strong DX receiver and it is evident when testing the receiver. We did not notice any issues during operation other than a burned out meter lamp. The receiver will pick up AM / SSB / CW / RTTY and has an FM mode option if installed. Sensitivity on SSB is .15uv and this is considered to be a superb SSB receiver and sought by many for tuning the amateur radio bands. This is the classic Icom IC-R71A manufactured by Icom in Japan from 1984 - 1996. It is a sturdy unit being well made by the folks at Icom and thus holds up well to hours and hours of hard use. The knobs and switches all have a great feel that allows the user to have confidence in the controls. If you take a look beneath the cover, you will see that Icom designed these units to last. There is very little plastic utilized in the construction of the R71A and the circuit boards are well laid out and efficiently organized within the chassis. Overall, the receiver design reminds us of mil-spec equipment except that Icom sold this receiver in the consumer market for over a decade. Hobbyists still hold the R71A in high regard when seeking weak signals and in searching for those tough DX catches. In looking at the pictures, you will see that the receiver is in nice overall condition with some minor signs of previous ownership. Please observe the HD pictures for specifics on cosmetics and feel free to email with any questions. Electronically, we found the receiver to be highly sensitive as it easily grabbed signals from all over the globe...literally. We tuned it to a variety of shortwave stations and then operated it on the amateur bands to verify the controls. Its design and operation has earned it a reputation as a strong DX receiver and it is evident when testing the receiver. We did not notice any issues during operation. There is scan feature, notch filter, 2 VFOs, a preamp, RF gain, 32 memories, tone control, multiple tuning rates (resolution of 10 Hz), AGC, and more. The receiver will pick up AM / SSB / CW / RTTY and has an FM mode option if installed. Sensitivity on SSB is .15uv and this is considered to be a superb SSB receiver and sought by many for tuning the amateur radio bands. Since the IC-R71A is a well known and highly respected receiver, there is lots of information available concerning it.
