This unit powers on, but some of the buttons have issues. The speaker one button will not stay in the lockdown position. The subsonic button is stuck in the down position and will not release. The left hinge button is also stuck in the down position. No further testing was performed beyond powering the unit on. I did not see/smell any smoke.

Here is a very nice example of this classic amplifier from my collection.Cosmetically, its in fantastic condition, a solid 8.The brushed chrome face-plate has all its lettering intact and is absent from any obvious flaws to the surface itself. The top bezel has a few light scratches and a nicked edge just above the loudness switch. All the original knobs and buttons are present in good shape. The top cover has just a couple of small scuffs. All the panel lights work fine.All controls and inputs, including the phono input, work as they should.Under the hood, the circuit boards are free of dust or grime and all appear to be stock. The switches and control pots were cleaned with Deoxit D-5 & F-5 a few years ago. They still work smoothly and are noise-free.Bias and offset are adjusted to spec and stay stable. Leon Kuby (one of the top audio gurus at h/k corporate) told me that the 670/505 were sonically superior to any of the Citation series, which were in the process of a makeover. That the 505 was superior to the Citation 19, is quite an achievement, considering that the 19 still is one great sounding amp. I purchased the amp as is in hopes of adding it. To my HK collection, but after cleaning it up and removing some of the dirt, the face plate revealed way too many dings /scratches for my taste. I prefer my vintage gear cosmetically on the mint side. It has a warm detail sound with good bottom end and separation for days. I have a HK built Model 450 receiver manufactured for wards, that receiver uses the same amp as the HK A-402 amplifier. It sounds very close to the HK505 but ultimately the 450 is more to my liking, It's a tad warmer but a little less bass. In the end, I could not get past its cosmetic flaws and I'm placing It for sale as parts/repair item. I paid $150 to have a tech repair this amp and I am looking to recover my cost.
