Description
This is your great chance to own a Gungnir, an excellent-sounding DAC with fully balanced output, clock regeneration, and with a fully separate analog section with discrete JFET buffers and summers. While this Gungnir is not using the Analog Device 5781BRUZ multibit chip, it uses the Delta/Sigma Asahi Kasei Microdevices AK4399 chipset. While the 5781BRUZ is great with piano and strings and warm as a velvet blanket, esp. with Mjolnir, this unit with the AK4399 is no slouch, very dynamic, and excellent with vocals. For collectors of the Schiit pantheon of devices this is a great find, as it is in my view, the finest-sounding D/S ever built by the company. How does this sound? Very nicely! In terms of the Schiit universe: This D/S Gungnir definitely sounds better than Modi Multibit 2, and yes might be edged by Gungnir Multibit A2 in terms of placement and soundstage (but in my opinion only perceptive in speaker setups, not headphones in my very personal experience). So, is this D/S Gungnir better to Gungnir Multibit? Yes in two aspects, one is speed of attack, and the other is the Human Voice. Yup, the human voice does seem more present and natural in this D/S Gungnir. The only Schiit that betters this is the Yggy (in any of its iterations, i.e A1/A2 & Yggdrasil+ OG and GS2) again in my very personal view. You can always give this unit a fair shake and can have it upgraded to the 5781BRUZ -- in my opinion, that combination sounds better than OpAmp based Yggys, which tend to be, yes super-smooth and very polite, but not as dynamic as the discrete analog-based JFET buffers and summers. Fully discrete rules! Always. (If you dont agree thats OK, for that Audio Science Review has many great DACs that specs-wise kill anything Schiit has ever made. BTW, if OpAmps is your thing, you may want to cut to the chase and get an FPGA from Chord or a newer Lampizator). My favorite feature of this DAC is its *three* outputs. XLR, and *two* SE outputs, which work great for connecting a true XLR preamp, a SE subwoofer, *and* a SE tube amplifier. This unit is built as a tank, and with Schitts Valencia California craftsmanship, where the best of their gear has been produced (Yggy OG, Aegir 1, Freya N, etc). Also, notice that VCXO/VCO regeneration is available in this machine. For some reason, that no longer seems to be listed in some of the newer Schiit products. Power cable & manual included. I will rummage in my attic and confirm later if I have the original box. Why am I selling, well, the collection needs a bit of pruning, and want folks to enjoy really awesome DACs versus having these sit on my shelf. ---------- Specs: D/A Conversion ICAKM AK4399 x 2 (4 total channels, hardware balanced configuration) Analog StagesAll fully discrete, JFET-input topology, DC coupled, summed for single-ended output Frequency Response, Analog Stage20Hz-20Khz, +/-0.1dB, 1Hz-100KHz, -1dB Maximum Output4.0V RMS (balanced), 2.0V RMS (single-ended) THDLess than 0.002%, 20Hz-20KHz, at full output IMD<0.002%, CCIR SNR> 112dB, referenced to 2V RMS InputsCoaxial RCA SPDIF, BNC SPDIF, Optical SPDIF, USB Clock ManagementBitperfect clock management at all native sample rates via Adapticlock analysis and VCXO/VCO regeneration, plus asynchronous USB. Alas, hope the video is released from under review but added a photo of the video as a preview. Ah, eBay! (Of course, monitor and speakers not included; The actual speakers heard are not the Creatives for computer output but are the legacy -- and the best -- original V6 KRK and the pre is a Mjolnir 2, the sweetest amp for a Gungnir imho). On Nov-08-24 at 22:31:31 PST, seller added the following information: Includes manual and power cord.
